Compa is not a name that has been thrown around very much in these parts, however, this producer/DJ has shared stage with big names such as Mala, Coki, Breakage, Cluekid, The Others and Silkie just to name a few. He first broke out on the airwaves when Joe Nice brought him in for his GetDarker TV show.

A wax enthusiast at heart, Compa makes a point of investing in a sub culture that has come back in the past couple of years. However, it is important to note that this is one man and not a major record label funding the appetite for wax.

He took things to a new level when he played his “Dem A Talk,” a refix of Mavado’s original track calling the tune “alright, I guess.” Instead of being “alright,” the refix embodies influence from older Dubstep tunes, the likes of Loefah. It will hopefully be released later in February and distributed through ST Holdings as a one-sided 12″.

It’s nice to see Compa getting more attention, especially now. Definitely looking forward to seeing more from him in the future!

Hello, JLD community! Welcome to The Beat Sheet, a track review and release recommendation series. Since I have no friends and no car, I can listen to music all day and find you the best of the best! I have been listening to bass music since 2007, turned on to dubstep by Distance’s classic, “My Demons.” Since then, I have branched out into every corner of the EDM world, and would like nothing more than to open a few ears to the vast world of underground beats. From the broken hip-hop of Los Angeles to the mutated UKG-techno hybrids of Central Europe, everything is fair game–as long as it’s fresh. Please, feel free to ask questions in the comments. Long live bass.

“Untroubled” – 123Mrk – Squelch & Clap

Kicking off his recent EP for Squelch & Clap, “Untroubled” sets the stage with a bubbling progression and soft stabs of white noise. As pitch shifted vocal snippets join the fray, the tune threatens to collapse into another pleasant “future garage” number, the formula for which we’ve all become too familiar with over the past year. Luckily, the drop reveals something completely different—a staggering skeleton of a beat, a craftily muted FM synth and enough swing to satisfy the most militant of broken beat-heads. Unlike many producers at the moment, who are content to crowd the mix with as many saccharine sounds as possible, Mrk practices restraint. It’s almost as if he took a tune and gutted it, leaving only the absolutely essential bits. This sense of space pervades the EP, proving that “future garage” doesn’t have to be predictable. Tipped.

“Come Between” – Jim-E Stack – Good Years

The man known as Jim E-Stack has been making the remix rounds for a year now, and has finally graced us with a debut of his own, the second release on UKF legend Lil Silva’s Good Years imprint. The title track is the strongest offering on the EP, wasting no time in laying down some impressive programming, complete with crisp pan-work and a tightly chopped break. A wordless sample choruses to maximum effect, and again, the “future garage” formula seems unchallenged. It’s then that Jim-E brings out the big guns, riding a lead that would make Jam City jealous as a piano plays call and response. The icing is the automation, highlighting the break and never allowing the mix to become too crowded. While it may fly a bit under the radar, the attention to detail on this track (and the rest of the EP) is astonishing. Sleeping on this is not recommended, unless of course you like being that kid who’s late to every party.

“Saved” – Clicks & Whistles

The name should not be new, as 2011 saw the well-deserved rise of North Carolina’s premiere production duo. Their synthesis of dirty south hip-hop and modern EDM is just as comfortable shaking the subs in your brother’s Celica as playing backdrop to summer roof parties. “Saved” epitomizes the C&W aesthetic, complete with a soaring Hoover-esque lead, airy brass stabs, and a low-end seemingly taken from Thug Motivation 103. The result is one of the most unabashedly celebratory tunes I’ve heard in awhile, and one that’s certain to make even the grumpiest of EDM purists crack a smile.

Ram Records own Delta Heavy have served up one of the finest Nero reworkings of recent memory. The 80′s infused track that synths around and launches into a breakdown complete with lazers, sensual vocals and heavy bass. With an almost moombahton feel to the beat, clocking it at a full six minutes, this Delta Heavy remix is going to be on heavy rotation.

One of 2012′s most anticipated new labels, ATOM Recordings, is launching their debut album with an arsenal of badass tunes from a squadron of some of the heaviest producers and up-and-comers from around the globe.

No surprise the roster is so savage, being a label founded by F3tch (AU), a well recognized dubstep producer, enthusiast, and true connoisseur of the heavy side of the genre. This incredibly powerful album features some of the latest heavyweights, namely xKore (UK), Captain Panic (US), and Romania’s own youngin, Bong. There’s even some Canadian heat in there from yours truly

Here’s a short description of the upcoming release snatched from ATOM Recordings…

The first installment from Atom Recordings is a prodigious 11 track album of sonic debauchery, rancid basslines and twisted melodies. Definitely an album to set the standard for things to come.

The action-packed compilation featuring a diverse line up of talent including Bong ,Xkore, F3tch, Au5, Captain Panic, Static Function, Elliot Mars, Subdue, Geoff Bukk, Big Sips, Melamin and Wicked Sway, Vortek and Endboss, with Styles ranging from filth to neuro to melodic. There is definitely something for the most seasoned critic.

The tracks on the Nucleus album are currently being supported by dubstep’s elite producers and DJ’s such as Excison, Datsik, Downlink, Quartus Saul, Numbernin6, Reid Speed, Borgore, Skream and Benga.

This explosive package detonates next Tuesday, 31st of January, and will be exclusive on Beatport.

This year was filled with a lot of bass. So many great tunes were released this year but only so many can go on the list! It pains me to say so but it’s also the reason for “top” lists. New producers, old producers, they all had something to bring to the table this year.

After flipping through a lot of tunes, I finally came to my conclusions on what my “Top 5”s were for 2011.

Bye bye 2011, it was a great year.

And hello 2012.

Top 5 LPs:

1) Pinch and Shackleton – Pinch & Shackleton: Tracks like “Burning Blood” send shivers down the spine with it’s soft percussion and the reminiscent sounds of early dubstep while “Levitation” bridges between dance and experimental music.

2) Silkie – City Limits Volume 2: Silkie delivers an extremely upbeat album. With tracks like “Untitled” (collab with Skream) as well as “Only 4 U,” it is easy to see that Silkie’s production belongs to both the headphone listener and the party junky. “Feel” (collab with Truth) remains my favourite with its deep kick, loud claps and eery synth.

3) Zomby – Dedication: Zomby has some of the creepiest productions I have ever heard mixing 16bit-like sounds with soft drums and piano arrangements that tie everything together. A lot of mystery surrounds this album and like many of his productions, it proves to be an avant-garde step with tracks such as “Witch Hunt.”

4) Sully – Carrier: Carrier is an album that perfectly describes where my head is with regards to bass music. For a year now, I have been seeing more and more juke tunes gaining popularity. Sully keeps a very playful UK Funky feel but “Scram” and “I Know” in particular are very subtle tunes filled with low hats and low sub levels at 160BPM.

5) VA – Mosaic Volume 1: This compilation from dBridge’s Exit label is one album that could not be missed this year. It’s filled with soft, easy listening tracks that perhaps best exemplify autonomic as a genre. “Open Arms” from Synkro remains the most “feel-good-in-the-morning” track I have ever heard. Other artists on the compilation include Distance, Indigo, Skream, Skeptical and Instra:mental to name a few.

Top 5 Singles:

1) Dub Phizix & Skeptical feat. MC Strategy – Marka/Rags: The best tune to end 2011. With almost chant-like emceeing by Strategy and the half-time surrounding it, this tune makes me think that 2012 will be a great year. “Rags” is an amalgamation of sounds everywhere, however maintains a hypnotic head bobbing feel.

2) Royal-T – Orangeade VIP: Royal-T has greatly contributed to the UK grime scene especially with a tune as insane as this. The claps keep the listener attentive amongst the catchy synth. I think by now I can recognize it as soon as the volume is brought up to mix it in. Definitely one of the most played tunes I’ve heard this year (but not overplayed!).

3) Distal & Mite – Attempt at Yellow/Chocolate Circuit: With the Embassy Recordings label, Atlanta-based Mite and Distal have delivered banger after banger. “Attempt at Yellow” has soft synths, but a heavily present sub to contrast. “Chocolate Circuit” reminds me of sounds used by Salva and takes it to a new level in a half-time beat.

4) Starkey – PC (feat. Merky Ace & Kozzie)/PC (Instrumental)/Peacekeeper: As a huge fan of the “purple” sound, Starkey’s single screams grime with bars by both Merky Ace (with a new EP) and Kozzie. The beat matches to these emcees more aggressive tones and having the instrumental gives a DJ a lot of leg room. The B-side, “Peacekeeper” has a heavy purple synth with that grime beat. P Money freestyled over it on Elijah and Skilliam’s Rinse.FM show.

5) Koreless – 4D/MTI: I do not know many future garage enthusiasts, however, I can say with certainty that this release from Koreless is exactly what I see the genre to be like. Using eery vocals, beautiful and subtle bass as well as the intricacies in between everything, Koreless’ release can be seen as an example of what future garage sounds like.

Honourable Mention: Cedaa – Justine: Though unreleased, Cedaa’s “Justine” is too great of a tune to leave unnoticed. Cedaa released his Jasmin EP on B.YOURSELF Division but this tune was a giveaway that makes me think that there is a lot coming from him for 2012. To have used a Justin Timberlake song and make into such a clean, minimal juke tune seems to me quite accomplishing.

Top 5 EPs

1) Krampfthaft – Makin’ Magic: This Dutch producer has pumped two very successful EPs so far. With tune’s at 160bpm, Krampfthaft adds his personal touch to the juke phenomena. A tune like “Carl Sagan The Man” rattles speakers with its immense bass kicks and “I Needed You” takes its listener to a new world with enchanting vocals (until it drops).

2) Burial – Street Halo: What more is there to say about Burial that hasn’t been said already. This three track EP contains haunting yet uplifting vocal bits surrounded by the ambiance that Burial’s sound is known for. As always, Burial remains a mysterious personae and seems to keep his audience begging for more.

3) Hudson Mohawke – Satin Panthers: I didn’t know much about HudMo until this year with their EP release. There is a lot of ground covered in this one similarly to the Krampfthaft. “Thunder Bay” bombards listeners with single shot horns and a hip-hop-like drum pattern which compliments their 160bpm tune “Cbat:” a weird synth playing on top of a drummer-boy sounding snare.

4) Wheez-ie – Keep Yer Chin Up: “Keep Yer Chin Up” alone is a track to be reckoned with. Wheez-ie’s EP ranges from heavy (“House Ball“) to more catchy sounds (“Barefoot Billy“) and feels totally complete with remixes from Salva and Dj Assault.

5) Kingdom – Dreama: Brooklyn-based Kingdom never ceases to amaze with his versatile productions and “Let You No” proves it. The beats are relaxed making this EP easy to listen to and well worth playing out.

1) Sicko Cell (Pusherman Remix) – Joy Orbison: “Sicko Cell” was already a sought after tune when it mysteriously appeared on Youtube. Pusherman takes the tune to a new front with a deep sub that emphasizes the rather dark sample.

2) I Am (Kid Smpl Remix) – Trim: Kid Smpl’s take on Trim’s “I Am” is a nice touch for a grime tune. Reminds me of “Numb” on Starkey’s album.

3) Ray Ban Vision (Luckybeard Remix) – A-Trak ft. Cyhi Da Prynce: This tune is super catchy…almost too catchy. It also has an amazing breakdown which changes the songs vibe completely.

4) I See You (Girl Unit Remix) – Lunice: Lunice’s “One Hunned EP” as well as trips overseas has earned this hometown producer a lot of attention this year. Girl Unit’s energetic touch to “I See You” makes for a great remix especially with the high note sub.

5) Be Like Me (Official Remix) – D Double E, Snoop Dogg, P Money and Professor Green: This “official” remix for D Double’s “Be Like Me” features fellow grime emcees P Money and Professor Green but the big surprise is Snoop Dogg on the first verse.

First, I suppose, an introduction is in order. My name is Nick and I DJ under the moniker The Orator. I have been heading up this event production company and DJ crew in Burlington, Vermont called Mushpost.

What started in 2009 as a local resource for the internationally burgeoning Dubstep community (a sound largely unfamiliar to the region at that time – hell, even Bass Drive Wednesdays in Montréal was still at tiny ol’ Koi Bar) has since evolved and developed into, if I do say so myself, a pillar of experimental and forward-thinking, bass-driven dance music for the Northeast of North America. A sound so un-insular that it can best be described as incorporating the best elements of every other genre ever. I’ve heard my fair share of proposed genre names but it appears the most recognizable is Future Bass (although the vastitude of issues with using the word “Future” have spawned an equal amount of self-deprecating jokes – we’re so ftr/fwd). My personal favorites are Fringe House and Goombawave. I did not make those up. There’s also Bashment, Warehouse and UK House. All different but all similar.

With that said, the amount of forthcoming music from this broadly-defined bass community is, at times, overwhelming… in a very good way. While many of these tunes you can find on Mushpost’s Facebook page or on I Love Bass Music throughout the week, I felt it best to save them all for one single blog post to come out at the end of the week, every week. It’s a pretty varied EP in terms of moods and individual originality; they all have their own charm, which is definitely something I can appreciate.

His own recently-born label Gawa Recordings is delivering this one to the masses, and if you’re slightly impatient, asking yourself when the hell does this come out? … TODAY! NOW! GO GET IT!

Beautiful and smooth is probably the best way to describe this forthcoming Life Act EP from Fau & Deam on the Dubporn outfit. Warsaw based producer and DJ Fau who’s roots lie in abstract hip hop and trip hop has been producing dubstep, future garage, techno and ambient tracks for Subtopia Recordings and Apparition Recordings. He is also a member of the ‘Mustnotsleep’ DJ collective. Deam, residing in Zielonka, Poland, has received much praise from Xlr8r and the like for his amazing ‘Square Love’ EP, release on Concrete Cut Records. His sounds, both organic and robotic, are winning over the presses ears.

Together Fau & Deam have produced the ‘Life Act’ EP. They began working together both live and in the studio in the spring of 2011. Life Act, comprised of six deep dubstep and future bass tracks, is lush, beautiful and unforgiving. I would like to first and foremost thank all the supporters of J’aime le Dubstep. Whether you’ve been on board since the beginning or just recently, the growth as a community and the positive feedback over the last couple years has been outstanding. So thank you for continuously revisiting us, and enjoying the mixes wherever you happen to be listening to them! I’ve done my best with this series to reach all types of heads, and to not favor my preferred end of the spectrum.
So whatever your sound may be, hopefully there was something in the series that suited your taste.

To all the Dj’s that got down, I respect you all, and the greatest reward in this has been the ability to network and build relationships, business and personal, with artists around the globe. That’s what this is all about, a community. Linking heads to new artists, and helping artists expand their fanbase. With a Blog & mix series, theres something in it for everyone. And that’s what drew me to join on with Contruct a couple years back.

Its been a great 100 and some mixes coordinated with Construct, as I joined on at mix no.44. With the new year here, it’s about closing and opening chapters. I just turned 25, just moved back to the west coast of Canada and am pursuing some new project ideas and will be dedicating much more time to my label, Crude Records.

If you’re not in it fully, why be in it at all? I’d prefer to now focus all of my energy into my own projects. My official last coordinated mix will be coming up very soon, so keep your eyes peeled for Seven’s exclusive Blackbox studio mix! And maybe a few more surprises.

There is zero hard feelings anywhere. All members of JLD are extremely close personal friends, nothing has changed other than my taste in music and direction I feel I’m heading.

It’s no secret I support Vancouver’s music scene. My label, Crude Records, is almost solely Vancouver Producers. And expect that trend to continue in 2012. Without a shadow of a doubt, it’s Max Ulis’ day. He’s had a steady rise to the very top of Canada’s, and even North America’s list of Heavyweights. If you ask Western Canadians about the beginning, and who was making it happen… His name, aswell as the Lighta! Crew is sure to be named at the top. “Dark underground rooms with one light and a whack of subs, playing the good deep stuff.” Although I’m not from Vancouver, I’ve lived there. And these are the things original Vancouver heads remember. Max has been doing it proper since day 1. Promoting, DJing, Producing and now owns a label, 10Pin, with Calgary’s Lorne B. He’s been getting recent nods from highly respected sources such as XLR8R, and in my opinion, alongside Toronto’s Kevin McPhee, are the next two Canadians to really blow on an international scale. And of course they would join HxdB (Vancouver) and XI (Toronto), who have both clearly made their mark as a cut above most. Yes, it’s clear now that Canada has more to offer than Rotten Records. Our country is extremely diverse, and artists such as Max are very present, very involved and it’s only a matter of time before the rest of the world realizes how much of a flourishing Bass Music scene we have. Coming hard and heavy, we’ve got JLD #156 by Colorado’s OMEGA to start off this very hectic week which I think this mix is well suited to explain the chaos and full on party which is about to rein over Montreal. A frozen event on the port of Montreal that we call Igloofest. To follow this, we’ll have a strong deep mix to warm you back up at the end of the week.

BIO BLIPS:

Omega is a bass music producer and DJ, currently residing in Denver, Colorado, US. He first discovered electronic music through the big beat, IDM, and industrial scenes during the late ’90s, and bought his first pair of turntables in 2000. Over the years his tastes have also included jungle, progressive breaks, psychedelic trance, and dub – and in the last couple of years have settled into dubstep and related forms of bass music. Though DJing will always hold a special place in his heart, recently writing and producing tunes has become Omega’s primary obsession.

Omega performances are a hybrid between a DJ set and a live performance – using a laptop running Ableton Live, with several MIDI controllers, effects processors, and synths. An Omega set will always include many original tunes, remixes, edits, and mashes, with a heavy emphasis on live improvisation and manipulation. His energy and stage presence, combined with his monster tunes, inevitably whip a crowd into a frenzy of bassed out bliss. He has shared the stage with: EOTO, Liquid Stranger, Vaski, Eskmo, The Malah, Cold Blank, Bird of Prey, Trillbass, Roksonix, Virus Syndicate, NiT GriT, Calvertron, and many more.

Omega tunes blend the most raw and aggressive aspects of dubstep – snarling synth sounds and organ churning sub-bass – with a careful attention to sound design and elegant use of melody, creating a sound that is at once primal, funky, and psychedelic. Racking up nearly half a million plays on his Soundcloud profile, and getting DJ support from the likes of Liquid Stranger, Jantsen, Samples, Sugarpill, Love + Light, Future Simple Project, The Crystal Method, Zeno, and many others, it’s clear that Omega is a force to be reckoned with in the bass music scene.

2010 saw numerous original and remix releases on various labels, including an Omega remix on The Crystal Method’s “Sine Language” Remix EP. 2011 will bring many more official remixes and singles, several EPs, his first vinyl release, some epic collaborations, and an extensive touring schedule.

In commemoration of their 25th release and two amazing, action-packed years of peddling some of the most original and diverse underground bass music artists from around the globe, MalLabel Music, founded by former music promoter and San Francisco resident Mal Harper, has created an amazing anthology of their most successful work. Boasting a rather hefty 15 tunes, the compilation sports some of the industry’s most recognizable artists and a name that rolls right off the tongue: The Platinum Unicorn Collection, a nod to label owner Mal Harper’s favorite mythological creature.

The Platinum Unicorn Collection rolls tough right out of the gate, starting off with a new west coast classic, “Purple Gangsta,” remixed by the one and only don of dubstep, DZ. Next on the hit list is Minnesota’s “Meow.” Minnesota has had quite a year in the industry, and should be recognized by anyone following the game. LA veteran 6Blocc’s “Bad Boy,” reworked by San Francisco’s Blackheart, drives home anthem basslines that keep the release flowing. “This One Called Dub” by Skulltrane, MalLabel’s first single, follows next and then comes Bass master Downlink’s “Deep Space,” which carries the distinction of being one of two tunes the label has made videos for.

Udachi’s banging remix of the incomparable Mochipet’s “For When The World Ends” weighs in and continues the directory of dominating production. The Widdler’s spaced-out and rocking tune “Flexstar” makes an appearance next, followed by Bakersfield duo HD4000 with their dark and sinister “Jekal.” Toledo, Ohio bad man Ceeker’s “Body Rocker,” refixed by Colorado great Zeno, is next on the comp.

Helicopter Showdown follows with their signature beefcake sound on a banger called “Get Tuff.” This San Francisco quartet has made a huge splash in the pool of the bass music industry in the last year. Konekta, one half of up-and-comer duo Free Crush, hits hard on the next tune with his remix of Mycho Pan Cocoa’s “Drugs in My Pocket,” followed up by Zombie-J’s massive crusher “Gristle.”

Next up on the bill is Germany’s funky bass technician Mr. Boogie’s solid banger “Woodpecker,” followed by East Coast killer The Frim’s remix of Free Crush’s “Hammer Down.” Finally, closing out the compilation is “Rolling With My Crew” by El Diablo featuring vocals written by Mal herself. This tune has the distinction of being the first video MalLabel released, and has become a veritable theme song for the label.

In the world of underground dance music, labels come and labels go. Some forever change the face of the game, while some fizzle and fade away without so much as a hit.

“The Platinum Unicorn Collection is a celebration of my first two years and 25 releases,” explains Mal, who spent her early 20s snowboarding and promoting parties in the Bay before starting her own label. “I want to continue to fill dance halls with a distinctive and commendable catalog of killer tunes for years to come!”

Teknian
Formerly known as Tek9, this dude is always about quality with his distinct approach to production.

Static Function
UK producer who definitely knows how to make a banger… deep and catchy melodies, heavy drops, powerful snares, and top notch synthesis.

Culprate
Whether it’s heavy or soothing, Culprate never seizes to impress with his attention to detail and creative presence. A true mastermind.

A3
I’ve only recently discovered A3, but he’s in my top 5 for a reason. I hear solid influences from the likes of Megalodon, P0gman, and Badklaat.

Bwana
Such a fantastic producer. Extremely chilled out beats, deep bass and always full of emotion.

Top 5 Switch-Ups

Reso – Ishimura
[Civil Music] I doubt I’m the only one who finds this tune easy to leave on repeat. The dubstep-to-105bpm switch-up is just ridiculously amazing.

KPC – Devastate
[Play Me] A drumstep tune that is simply downright badass. And just when you thought the second half of the tune was going to be a repetition of the first…

Dayn & Daladubz – Warheads
[Chronos Records] Wow… I tend to think robotic and transformer-style tracks nowadays mostly sound generic. Thanks guys for proving me wrong.

Bratkilla & Bong – Shockwave
[unreleased] Might not be released yet, but in this case it’s a tune I’ve been waiting for since 2011. A different approach to switch-ups, and one that I can appreciate a lot. The use of time signature alterations aren’t very common these days in electronic music. This one works well and is simply awesome.

Bjork – Crystalline
[One Little Indian] Last October Bjork released her latest album which, just as I expected, was down right tasty. In what I think is the album’s hit, ‘Crystalline’ stuns the listener with a chaotic intense transition from delicate chimes and smooth electronic percussion, to mean and ever-so well placed Amen breaks packed with fuel-injected triplets. One of my favorites from 2011.

The End Is Part Of The Dance – No Place For Us (Blokhe4d remix)
[Tuff Love Dubs] Heavyweight Drum & Bass duo Blokhe4d does this track justice on The End Is Part Of The Dance’s debute EP ‘No Place For Us’

Qualmsound – Breath (Blynk Remix)
[Soulstep] Quality tune that gives me shivers all while having a super relaxing ambient feel. The percussion fits perfectly, and every element has it’s place and role in the mix.

Filth Collins and Pop The Hatch – Let Me Go (Phatman Remix)
[Betamorph Recordings] Hands down would have given Phatman the #1 spot on Filth Collin’s “Let Me Go” remix album. A straight up banger.

Enigma Dubz – Badness (Sub Antix remix)
[Dank 'N' Dirty Dubz] One of the deepest and certainly heaviest tunes I’ve ever purchased. I’m addicted to rinsing this one out.

Vaetxh – Clipper (Culprate’s Water Witch Remix)
[King Deluxe] Such an intricate production. Needless to say that any Culprate remix is intricate, Vaetxh alone is certainly the type of artist I call ‘organic’.

Top 5 Collaborations

G-A & Pubman – Rough With The Smooth
[free dub] A perfect duo, and the title speaks for itself. Brilliant tune.

Dark Elixir & Trampa – Bag Of Weed
[Play Me 2] Two extremely polished producers with some of the heaviest sounds and drops, this collab always sets a powerful and angry vibe. A must-have for any hip-hop/metal-head combo dubstep fan.

Foreign Beggars – LDN feat. Alix Perez
[Never Say Die] Being a fan of their jaw-dropping work with Alix Perez on the track “The Cut Deepens” released back in 2009, this track on Foreign Beggars “Harder They Fall” album was my personal favorite.

Noisia & Phace – Program
[Vision Recordings] Man do i have a weak spot for Neurofunk. This collab between Noisia and Phace is a god damn beast.

Top 5 “That’s Some Next Level Sh!t!”

Phear Phace – Speculate (TeK9 Remix)
[2 Much Bass Records] It seems like 2011 was the year that the 100(ish)bpm tracks emerged, and rightfully so. Tek9′s monster basses and grooves compliment Phear Phace’s distinct edge on mean bass-music.

Culprate – Green (Urbain Rain Forest)
[dub] I often ask myself if this guy is even human. This song is a gem. Total gem. I’m not sure what else to say… you just have to listen to it if you haven’t already done so.

Eptic – Fools
[Chronos Records] Eptic is simply a game changer. Sure, this style of banger seems easy to formulate these days, but no one really has it down like Eptic. He definitely raised the bar of the “Circus” sound in 2011, and in my opinion blasts all the Circus boys out of the water. Wouldn’t be surprised if Eptic was originally a typo trying to spell Epic.

Amon Tobin – Surge (16 Bit remix)
[Ninja Tune] With another demonstration of exceptional sound design, Amon Tobin’s “Surge” remixed by the almighty duo, 16 bit, crushes the hell out of any mimickers challenging their status.

Benga – Smack Your Bitch Up
[free] I always get a jitter of excitement when I hear new Benga material. Unfortunately I am never sure anymore what to expect, but on the contrary that can also be a great thing. Not only is this track free, but I also had a hard time speaking after hearing this piece of art. Plus, the video is pretty dope too.

Well, all in all, 2011 was a great year with great discoveries. It’s sorta hard, if not, impossible to come up with accurate top 5s because there is sooooooo much good and brilliant music out there, but these were all artists and tunes that I found stood out amongst the mass. New talent seems to be popping up out of no where, all over the place, which is ironic in a way. With 7 billion people on this planet, there’s no risk of running out of great music from all kinds of audio geniuses. 2012 surely won’t be any less I’m sure, and I’m looking forward to slowly unwrapping what the next year has in store for all of us bass music enthusiasts. If you search hard enough, and dig deep enough, it can be Christmas every day!

It’s taken me a few days to shake the fog in my head and capture a clear picture of what 2011 was for me musically and as a result I’ve almost written a book with my Top 5s. While it was hard to narrow down the Top 5 in anything (especially tracks) I think I’ve pulled together the best of what made 2011 a great year for music.

I was going to say how 2011 was a growing year for me and blah blah but you’d be hard pressed to find someone who didn’t experience a bit of development over the past year. But that being said there were some major developments in my musical tastes. I got over my drum and bass grudge, moved onto more of the post-dubstep sound and started to really shake the idea that music has to fit within the confines of a genre. I started to branch out with my writing, including taking on roles at both sub|division and here at J’aime le Dubstep, as well as completely revamping my fledgling website into a full on bass music blog in it’s current Dub Selekta format.

In regards to my Top 5s, I’ve tried my best to put links in where I could so you can go checkout the release/artist/track for yourself. Most of the mixes you can still download if you’re feelin them, hopefully you find something awesome in amongst everything mentioned here that makes you just as excited as I was when I discovered it.

LOWPASS TV (GroundedTV) Exclusive Mini Mix – DJ Cure
I had this mix on repeate for 2 months straight; it flows well, mixing is amazingly tight and track selection is prime. Cure knows his stuff.

Solar Chrome Mix – Tusk
This mix forever reminds me of the west coast. Tusk played an awesome set in Victoria when he came for Theory Thursdays, he’s got a great sense of tunes and as he so accurately points out about this mix; “warning may contain: mutated footwork / juke, hyper-sexuality, abrupt tonal shifts, scattered shards of uk funky, disorienting speed adjustments, post genre liminality, blazing sunlight, nocturnal bliss…” etc etc etc

RA.259 – Skream
Aaaah Skream. He’s managed to withstand the mainstream explosion of dubstep while still producing great music and curating mixes that make me squirm with excitement.

Opposites Attract: Dub Selekta Podcast 6.0 – Neon Steve
I hate to be bias but this mix was such a big one, had some of the biggest hits we ever had on Dub Selekta, and was made by a good homie. The Opposites Attract title was not given to it lightly and with the tracks hitting the middle road between so many genres it makes my list.

Dazed – 16bit
Came out a bit later in the year but its definitely a big one as well. 16bit incorporates so many genres and many big tracks from 2011, although very few of their own, to pull together a great showcasing of bass.

Machinedrum at Rifflandia Music Festival (Victoria)
It was one of the best (if not THE best) set of live Juke/Footwork I’ve ever seen. Everyone in that place was losing their biscuits, the music blew my mind and I danced like a mad women.

Night Slugs Decibel Festival Showcase – Kingdom, Bok Bok, Girl Unit, Monolithium (Seattle)
The sub|div family took over the spot and the last 20minutes of back to back mixing between Kingdom, Bok Bok and Girl Unit was a well welcomed surprise.

Benga (Vancouver)
The last show for me before Shambhala this year and after hearing mixed things about Benga’s live show I was happy to report that I was a gross, sweaty mess afterwords and quite pleased with his performance.

Cut Chemist (Victoria)
I’d been waiting almost 10 years to see Cut Chemist, it was like a dream come true. Although he’s not really where he once was, it was still a monumental moment.

Andy C (Victoria)
Best drum and bass show I’ve ever seen. Vinyl+Jungle, Drum&Bass+club loosing their minds = amazing time.

Top Albums:

5000 Followers EP – S-X
This kid is changing the production game in the UK. His free EP 5,000 Followers was easily one of the best produced beat albums of 2011 and his tracks have been remixed by P Money, DJ Q, Toddla T, Dizzee Rascal, D Double E, Tempa T and Skepta (but that’s not all, the list goes on!) I’m stoked to see what S-X comes up with in 2012.

Levitate – Paper Diamond
I had this album on repeat for so long that I had to consciously put it away so I didn’t overplay it. Paper Diamond is housed under the Pretty Lights label and you can sense PL’s influence without being a direct rip off. This album crosses so many genres, stealing the best from all, and pulls it together to form a high energy release from front to back. Glitch lovers will delight.

Rinse 17: Elijah+Skilliam
One of my favourite mixes from Rinse this year as well as the best one in Grime, these two have given a much needed injection of life into the genre. The mix is easily played over and over and is completely different than much of the aggressive front that stereotypically comes with the genre. I regularly tune into their show on RinseFM and feel like these guys are so much more accessible and down to earth so gold stars for them on this release.

Cross the Line – Camo & Krooked
You truly can hear that Camo & Krooked went into the studio determined to make a smash hit. And so it’s no surprise at the album that they delivered. With a steady blend of club appropriate tracks coupled with the bass heavy smashers Camo & Krooked delivers an album that appeals to many across the bass spectrum. While I’m not in love with every single one of the tracks (e.g TC singing on tracks doesn’t work for me), there are enough gems in this album to make the list.

Tron: Legacy R3configur3d – Various
I feel in love with this movie more for the music and visual than the story and can say without a doubt, this movie excelled due to the great soundtrack provided by Daft Punk. It hit all the right buttons for me regardless of what folks say about Daft Punk’s current production. The R3configur3d album is a step towards a more glitched out, bass heavy soundtrack filled with some of my favourite folks. Highly recommend checking it out if you haven’t already.

Take it Back – Toddla T (Dillon Francis Remix)
A great first introduction to Moombahton, this reworking of Toddla T’s track energizes the original to the point of electrification.

Fabrication – Emalkay
Easily my favourite Dubstep song of 2011, Emalkay smashes it without tearing off faces and it works so well. Coupled with an eerie but eclectic music video, Fabrication flexes major muscle.

Noisia & Hybris – Crystalline
It’s a classic example of autonomic Drum and Bass and it’s dark tone makes it extra sexy, Drum and Bass at it’s best. Yet another track that I had to consciously stop playing to prevent myself from overdoing it.

Me & You – Nero (Dirtyphonics remix)
Nero+Dirtyphonics=winning combination. With the epicness of Nero’s production combined with Dirtyphonics aggressive and thunderous sound, one of THE tracks rinsed out at festivals this past summer.

Ride It Every Time – Kingdom/Girl Unit
Kingdom, Girl Unit and Cierra are nothing but a winning combination on this sensual r&b fused track. The Night Slugs boys bring it hard with this track that will have you shufflin your shoulders in no time.

I absolutely love Kingdom; his music is well produced and borrows from all my favourite genres. His live shows are always great spectacles and he is a very on point person who speaks well in interviews. Plus! the fact that he’s constantly reworking and editing tunes and seems to have a stockpile of insanely well produced track. 3 stars in my book

Gramatik
Besides being one of the easiest artists to work with, he was openly candid with me and was very receptive to my questions. And his last words? “Start your day off with a fat ass joint”….we’ll take it!

Caspa
Who wouldn’t want to interview the Don and one of the leading originators in Dubstep? I pulled out all the stops to make this interview happen and no one could wipe the shit eating grin off my face when Caspa told me ” I knew my stuff” and he’d recommend me to others.

Besides being an awesome dude and chill guy, he was one of the most professional artists I’ve ever worked with and was quite candid in our interview. Stoked to see what 2012 holds for him!

DJG
I absolutely love DJG, and am a big fan of his live show which has been amazing each time I’ve seen him, so naturally jumped on the chance to interview him pre-BassCoast Festival. He also responded quite positively to some of my hard hitting questions, which not all artists do and his responses were very refreshing. Kudos!

Kingdom
Ah Kingdom, he will forever be one of my favourites. Another very intellectual artist who was very open with me and told me straight how he felt about music, genres and such. Makes me love his music that much more.

Obscure, soulful and dripping wet with bass is probably how I would start to describe this debut EP from Montreal based beat producer Wolfey. Sleep Country weights in with 3 solidly produced tracks which carry you threw a variety emotions. At the moment, the title track Sleep Country is pretty much on repeat in my headphones. Enough said.

With this project, Alexander Wolfe (a.k.a. Wolfey) aimed to capture the fear and uncertainty that hung quietly like a shadow over North America in the aftermath of the 9/11 attacks. Musically, he draws on a diverse array of influences ranging from artists such as Burial, DJ Shadow, and early James Blake to Radiohead, Boards of Canada, and Miles Davis.

Wolfey re-contextualizes classic soul vocals from the likes of Nina Simone and Billy Withers, whose mournful performances compliment the ominous vibes established by his use of atmospheric field recordings, and speech samples taken from Harmony Korine’s films Julien Donkey-boy and Gummo.

This is Wolfey’s first release on Blenheim & Celtic (Montreal, CAN). He originally planned to include four tracks on this release; however, upon the recommendation of a friend, (LA-based beat-maker & mc, Jonwayne), Wolfey decided to withhold the fourth track from the release in order to develop it a bit further. It may or may not be released in the future–

The Sleep Country EP was mastered at Transition Studios, (London, UK). The artwork is by Lincoln Clarkes (Vancouver, CAN).

Wolfey is an electronic musician based in Montreal, Canada. He studied electronic music production through Berklee College of Music (Boston, US). He is currrently finishing up undergraduate work in Philosophy and History at McGill (Montreal, CAN). As a dj, Wolfey has been quietly establishing a reputation performing in support of such forward-thinking artists as Eskmo (Warp, Ninja Tune) and Jonwayne (Stones Throw, Alpha Pup).

Bukk Bukk Bukkstep!!! The cold weather and holiday season seems to have put artists Geoff Bukk and Big Sips into very giving moods, as they bless the Dubstep universe with five scorching offerings that are sure to drop jaws and change minds as the descent into 2012 begins. Montreal’s bad bwoi with the mile-long discography, Geoff Bukk, has never been a slouch in the studio as his many selections leave listeners with squinty eyes, clenched teeth, and racing hearts. This latest endeavor seems to show an even more refined and focused character that shines through even in the darkest tracks. The overall feel of “First Offerings” is that of a real hip hop album based in the Dubstep world, made with a machine-trash sensibility and a cyber-grime mentality. The many metamorphous metaphors Big Sips lays out make him the perfect fit to this ultra-futuristic smash fest.

Starting off with “514” Big Sips lays the foundation for this humungous track in the first few lines, listing for the audience a few of his favorite things. The music behind him, an ominous atmosphere of impending calamity, swells to the boiling point accompanied by Sips’ machine-gun like intro. When the track takes off, his delivery is not spoken…. it’s discharged like a weapon. Whether fast and bouncing, or slow and deliberate, his words follow the beat flawlessly, and with both intensity and clarity, hit the listener’s ear with pinpoint accuracy and full force. The effect, in this and the other tracks on “First Offerings” is a perfectly balanced symbiosis of lyric and sound, amplified by Geoff Bukk’s signature organic, yet grimy, style. Huge drums coupled with growling bass and atmospheres that fill every orifice, convey a feeling of importance and intensity track after Earth-shattering track. Seamless tempo changes are pleasantly unexpected, and give the tracks another level of depth. One song on the E.P. that really stands out from the others with respect to tonal quality and style is “Nothing Like This”. It begins with what sounds like a chime ringing out into a misty night sky, meeting a muffled kick and coming together to form a glitch-infused fantasy soundscape that is made solid by Big Sips’ haunting voice coming through the darkness to bring light to a grim reality.

Whether you’re in it for the larger-than-life sounds, the aggressive bass lines, or the razor-sharp lyrics, “First Offerings” from Geoff Bukk and Big Sips will give every cyber-grime enthusiast something to rave about well into the New Year.

Amsterdam-based record label Rwina is getting into the holiday spirit this week by giving away an EP by Krampfhaft, with remixes by Desto, Presk, and our most recent XLR8R podcast creator, Om Unit. Rwina has had a busy 2011, releasing material from the likes of Eprom, NastyNasty, Taz, and Doshy, and has a busy 2012 planned already, beginning with a label night in Amsterdam on January 21. The label night will be thrown in conjunction with Green Room at the Studio/K nightclub, and will feature a slew of artists from Rwina’s roster, as well as other like-minded DJs and producers. Check out full details for the party here. The label is also planning an US West Coast tour from January 30 to February 6, including stops in Sacramento, Arcata, San Francisco (at Low End Theory), and Los Angeles. As for the free EP, which can be downloaded here or here, it’s a three-song remix EP of Krampfhaft’s Makin’ Magic, aptly titled Re-Makin’ Magic, in which two songs from the original record have been remixed by three Rwina-associated artists for a short romp through UK garage and glitch-hop-flavored dubstep.

Rwina Records have had a big year! Lining up releases by some of my favourite producers in the game with so much style it might hurt your ego (NastyNasty, Krampfhaft, Desto, Doshy, EPROM, Terror Danjah and Starkey to name a few). This latest offering from this outfit does nothing but deliver the freshest sounds once again, with Taz a.k.a Taz Buckfaster dropping a 4 track EP on 12″ and digital format which includes a bonus 5th tracks for the digital downloaders.

Glasgow’s Taz Buckfaster – or just ‘Taz’ – was one of Rwina’s earliest discoveries. His two EPs on Rwina have leaned towards the dubstep side of things, imbuing them with the playful hip-hop inspired mischief that remains the Rwina trademark, playing with dub skank on “Kingston Bridge” and sending off firecrackers of concentrated synth melody in nearly uncontrollable bursts on “20 Red”. He now makes a welcome return to the label at the end of 2011 with the Neurotica EP with four brand new tracks of uncompromising Glaswegian heat.

With a reputation as a bit of a musical chameleon, having made his name across various labels and styles, this new release for Rwina sees Taz being quite neurotic in his hard-to-pin-down production approach – as the EP name might already given away! And while this could sound like a negative thing for most producers, in the hands and imagination of the young Scottish talent it’s a recipe for forward thinking dancefloor success.

The self titled opener for the Neurotica EP sets the bar high with a production that twists, turns and shifts without ever sounding forced or unpleasant. Going straight for the jugular, Taz unleashes a combo of colourful, catchy and bouncy synth melodies and chest-pummeling bass laced wiry grime-funk with just the right amount of editing trickery to keep the listeners and dancers engaged and sweating. “Hedge Your Bets” starts with some serious headnod swing before transforming itself into a seriously hypercolour beat manifesto with a driving rhythm and melodies that could be the perfect soundtrack for a remake of the classic Outrun. An out and out retro futuristic jam where Taz proves to be the earthly vessel for perfect execution of all sorts of styles.
The energy doesn’t let loose as you flip to the B side. “Stamma” keeps things popping with hectic nightmarish vocal loops and a rhythmic foundation that manages to alternate seamlessly between straight dancefloor energy and looser, crunk inspired swing held together by more pummeling bass. “Ebb Flow” closes the proceedings, unpredictable as he is, with a mellower vibe that soon enough morphs and drops into a hands-in-the-air club vibe that fuses 2step-inspired, swinging drum patterns and a swirling bassline resulting in yet more dancefloor fire.

Taz’s Neurotica EP further proves Glasgow’s supremacy in providing future minded dancefloor jams, regardless of genre or style. This is the sound of a young producer coming into his own and playing with templates and ideas in a way that makes it impossible not to get down and join in.

Cato‘s been making creating some buzz lately, but really caught my ear with this release on Prime Dub Records. King Deluxe have just recently (December 1st) celebrated their 1st anniversary, and what a year it was! Any avid reader of the site I’m sure have taken notice of this label, I’ve been a fan pretty much since the start. They’ve release a slew of great EPs blurring the lines between popular electronic music and experimental IDM/HipHop with artist such as Liar, Aleph, Muta, Fancy Mike and Vaethx to name a few.

Young UK-based producer Static Function has without a doubt been one of my favorites recently, with a steady momentum of banging releases that cease to disappoint. His killer tunes have been released by bad-ass labels such as Abducted Records, eight:fx, and the all-mighty Tuff Love Dubs.

This single is comprised of two very different tracks, in style and mood, although still complimenting each-other seamlessly creating a very strong duo, which I’m expecting to see pierce through the Beatport charts.

”All I Want” features the beautiful voice of Avielle Breen, whom I’ve never heard of before this track, and I’m honestly thankful for this discovery while crossing my fingers that we’ll all be hearing more of her. This one will definitely be a hit, as I have been playing it out frequently. Everyone seems to go nuts… such strong and powerful emotion.

The second track, ”Final Message” is as powerful of a track, though a lot more inclined on the heavy and mean side. This one will definitely get the crowd jumping, kicking, headbanging etc. Don’t be so quick to anticipate the track though, a genius ‘breather’ bridge definitely provokes goosebumps. You’ll just have to check it out for yourself with the clips below, followed by a trip to the Beatport shop.

Checkout this fresh new video of Flux Pavillion during one of his recent sets at KOKO in London when he opened up for Skrillex last month.

The track is eclectic; with a saxophone squeal is used as one of the primary dubstep wobbles and is a fresh change from tear out bass. An experimental progression that is certainly a welcome hit. The video is pretty good as well, gives good insight into a Flux Pavillion show if you haven’t had a change to check one.

Flux also recently announced on twitter/facebook that he’s working on a new album and is currently in the studio with Nero! Watch for big things out of him in 2012.

I can say with confidence that this is my favourite release to date from both Wicked Fat Noize and Dub Cartel Recordings. Two names I often affiliate myself with, so the combination of both is very exciting and you’ll hear why soon… Well actually, if you listen to our DUBSTEP.FM show (Tuesdays 8pm EST/ 1am GMT) you must have heard GunSmoke play atleast 10 times, simply cause i’m addicted to it. Wicked Fat Noize is gonna be a force to reckon with! At only 18th, this young Montreal producer has already released on a hand full of labels including ABAGA Records, Hazardous Sounds and BassBong to name a few.

Another big name shooting out of the UK, xKore is definitely an artist deservingly getting an enormous package of attention, and one that I’ve been checking out for the passed while. Killer beats, heavy tones and quality sound design… can’t go wrong with productions such as Hello, or Boom.

Basically, xKore has come up with 4 amazing tracks for his debute on Gawa Recordings, titling it Lazershark EP (which, in my opinion, is pretty damn cool). The exclusive release is scheduled to hit the virtual Beatport shelves next Friday (December 2nd) which is an awesome way to start of the month (or end the year?), and I’m confident that it’s going to shake up the charts and knock a few out of the competition.

I’m pretty stoked about this, and for anyone who isn’t yet familiar with xKore, well, get with it, or get ready to hear about him whether you intend to or not.

This is quite big. Win an opening spot at this winter’s Igloofest in Montreal! If you’ve not heard about Igloofest yet, here is a little info about it.

This year will be the 6th edition of Igloofest in Montreal, a 9 night outdoor freezing cold wicked awesome fun time with headlining DJs from around the world. The nights span over the last 3 weekends of January (Thursdays, Fridays & Saturdays) and attract around 10,000 people each night! (Brought to us by the fine people at Piknic Elektronique)

This year, we are very excited to learn that MALA will be the main act of the opening night, followed by Pearson Sound, Buraka Som Sistema and many, many other great acts on the following nights (mostly in the house, techno branch of things). It’s a wicked fun time out in the cold of night, with thousands of people jumping around in the wildest snow gear imaginable.

Well this year, Igloofest and Bench have teamed up to offer a round trip to Montreal, $1000 in Bench gear and of course a coveted opening slot of the main stage of the festival!

All you have to do is read the instruction of course, and submit your 30min mix to mixcloud with all the proper tags and guidelines. Any style of music is welcomed, so stress your flex a little and see what you can come up with!

I’ve already submitted my own mix and I suggest you all to do the same. It’s a great chance for you to be seen and listened to by people of all demographics and taste.

Well well well… here we go again. Round 2 for the insanely heavy duo, SubDog and BratKilla, coming back around strong with their second mix featuring many of the heaviest underground dubstep producers: Alpha & Omega.

This mix will definitely hurt feelings and disturb the faint-hearted. Brace yourself for some of the nastiest sounds, heaviest drops, tightest rhythms and satanic-like emotion, all combined together to create a one-and-a-half-hour metal-infused masterpiece.

Those of you familiar with their equally-heavy first duo mix Death By Decibels, which received and outstanding response reaching over 30,000 downloads and quite a shocking buzz throughout the underground dubstep scene, then you would be a lunatic not to be excited about Alpha & Omega.

Already attracting an enormous amount of attention with over 2000 plays in just over a day, and downloaded by ‘deathstep’ enthusiasts in over 65 countries around the world, Alpha & Omega is definitely a must-have and will become a classic in the (new) series.

Bratkilla is one of the hardest and darkest, and there is generous amount of his originals included in here. Some of the featured artists in this mix have also become a few of my recent personal favorites, such as 12GAUGE, Mantis and Teknian. I can honestly say that each and every one of the producers showcased in here are to look out for, and undoubtedly, to look in to.

Earlier this week the Edmonton based duo known as Knight Riderz dropped an appropriately titled EP Bangin On The System full of heavy glitch hop and dubstep sounds. Dropped on Simplify Records, the release has four bangin tracks that flow through familiar bpm’s currently hype in the bass world. Bit of glitch, injections of moombhaton-esque sounds, some others that are very much on the electro/dubstep tip; it’s a hefty sampling of delicious vibes.

As Simplify themselves says:

The crunkadelic Canadians return with their latest offering, and Simplify debut: “Bangin On The System”. Robotic vocals flutter over hyphy synth lines and glitched out rhythms; all of the ingredients are there. It’s clear that Nick Degree and Jake Roberts have been busy cooking up some serious heat in the Knight Riderz studio.

Reso has for a long time been a very strong contender in the world of Dubstep, and for good reasons. The guy has been a killer producer since before these current trends in popular dubstep. A few years ago, you could scare away an entire dancefloor or have’em all running towards the speakers at the drop of a Reso tune. It was like having a sound canon at your disposal. Times have changes but Reso’s skill level is as sharp and current with the times as it ever was. Teamed up with a remix from drum’n'bass juggernauts Evol Intent and NYC’s Electro rockabilly king Drop The Lime, you’ve got a 12″ press that people are gonna kill for. Digital and Vinyl both available November 21st from Civil Music.

Reso returns with the Ishimura EP and further showcases production excellence. Reso’s unique brand of hi-tech dubstep and sinister electronics are exquisitely presented across tracks ‘Ishimura’ and ‘Vanquish’ The package is completed with remixes from D’n’B aficionados Evol Intent and Trouble and Bass’ Drop the Lime. From the outset ‘Ishimura’ is ominously futuristic. The foreboding sample of the eponymous title track introduces you to its creator’s highly claustrophobic world, where threatening snares cut through dark atmospherics. Crunching industrialised melodies and an intricate use of space pin the listener down. While from the shadows while sharp metallics menace; this is the calm before the storm. An impossible crescendo follows next. Impeccably executed by its creator and set against a swung half time beat, all elements of the track lock in and unleash an assault of monstrous sonics.

No less intense ‘Vanquish’ continues Reso’s unnerving journey. More hostile tension forges the way for a ricocheting beat while unearthly sounds circle wildly. Vanquish is enveloped in a pulsating high voltage bassline which rolls on into darkness before recoiling only once to rear up and display it’s makers full armory. A humbling display of detailed drum programming, micro-edits and low-end manipulation, that like previous outings such as ‘Mind Games’ (Temjin EP) and War Machine (Valken EP), showcase a producer working to standards unattainable by most. On the flip Ishimura is remixed. Evol Intent are first in line and don’t disappoint. The highly respected Atlanta based trio take an unrelenting approach, keeping the vibe of the original they switch up the rhythm and tempo for a hard hitting D’n’B revision with a half time feel.

Drop the Lime’s Dark Tunnels remix is aptly named, diversifying ‘Ishimura’, shuffling the claustrophobia for vast spatial atmospherics. Clanging, foreboding clashes echo, creating a sense of almost agoraphobic dread. Tense percussion builds as the focus switches to the unnerving synths of the original. Ishimura is released on 21/11/11 on 12” Vinyl and Download and is the fifth in a series of genre redefining releases for Civil Music (after “If Ya Can’t Beat Em”, “Heavy Arms”, “Temjin EP” and “Valken EP”) Reso’s long awaited debut album is now set for 2012.

At first Dr Pytor didnt mean much to me, as I wasnt previously aware of his work but after listening to this clip below from his new LP Introduction to Zoology coming out this Thursday, November 17th on F4TMusic; I’m standing up and taking notice. “Introduction to Zoology” is the first album of music composer and film editor Bartosz Cichonsky. The title of his album is certainly sarcastic and that is in fact a clue about how much offbeat it is.
Doctor in atmosphere for some, Pytor’s signature sound is known to be deep and dark. His music consists in a combination of drones and broken dubstep beats. This IS dubstep music, but it carries a vibe that’s miles away the kid banger tunes.
In each of his tracks, the doctor sets up some ambiances and unfolds them with epic writing skills to surprise, thrill and hypnotize the listener. His incredible drum programming finds its roots into the knowledge of jazz he has been nurturing for 15 years and it is no coincidence that his grooves are that much complex. In fact, Pytor’s ability to absorb the listener into his sound is absolutely stunning, building up with impeccable sense of progression and attention to details that makes for very a consistent album, suited for both deep listening and crowd tearing.
The collector edition of this album has been hand-crafted by our crew. From the original drawings of Jeff, we designed a unique digipack and printed it white on deluxe black paper. Limited edition of 450 numbered copies.

Following a youthful decade of producing beats between New York and Boston, 22-year-old Bennett Kuhn has honed in on a sound that spans a wide range of contemporary electronic music. Ranging from futurist hip-hop a la Low End Theory through Chi-Town juke to post-dubstep, Kuhn’s sound is raw, energetic and individual.
‘Slime Beach’ is a slinky angry rasta crunk explosion. Manically ascending 3-octave synth kalimba arpeggios are punctuated by mammoth sharp 808 kicks and g-funk square leads rising up like a symphony, with extra vibraslap for the win. ‘Stoneskipper’ pushes uptempo, again juicing the bass bins with distorted square waves that mutate and screech, while percussion samples salvaged from a dusty Polynesian ethnographic recording keep things generally funky. ‘Back ‘N’ Forth’ is deeper, with brooding detuned pads washing over solid 808 footwork rhythms while two tracks of severely panned vocal mantras intertwine and separate in polyrhythm. ‘Island’ is the most melodic of the bunch, a jubilant glittery synth workout underpinned by quaking sub kicks constantly on the verge of erupting into new and more violent ranges of infrasound. ‘We’re Gonna Make It’ is love song. Warm vocals and guitar lifted from the solo output of ‘Zombies’ lead singer ‘Colin Blunstone’ are reconfigured around a halftime shuffle, with static snares, lazer blasts, and persistent lower-than-low subs setting the pace. ‘We’re Gonna Make It’ features on the vinyl only but is available as a free download with additional remixes from Obey City, Japan’s Magical Mistakes and Kuhn’s ‘Alt Dub’.
On remix detail, the recently unmasked Philip D Kick (read the story of the Footwork Jungle EP series) and Providence’s best kept secret, The Range both rework ‘Slime Beach’. Kick provides his last ever remix which takes a hybrid half-step juke-junglist route and adds club punch to what is an already arresting number. The Range meanwhile looks in a smoother and more translucent direction, swapping the emphasis to new vocal samples that grow into a majestic and euphoric epic. ‘Back ‘n’ Forth’ is retooled by London’s Drop/Dead and Baltimore’s howse. Drop/Dead’s remix shifts into deep funky old school boom bap electro with a Frankenstein new vocal mantra (“What the F***?”), while howse redefines the brooding darkness of the original with a churning ambient track like early Boards of Canada but with a juke sensibility. The EP rounds off with a blast from the imagination of S. Maharba, whose haunting take on ‘Stoneskipper’ showcases his beautifully gloomy yet majestically soulful approach to beatcrafting.
Irrepressibly linked to Astro Nautico, the Brooklyn-based label/blog/party collective co-founded in 2009 by Kuhn along with Obey City and Paul Jones, his initial output came in the form of a series of self released free EPs including ‘Quiet Nights EP’ (featuring reworks from the likes of Young Montana?, InfinitiRock, Obey City and others) and ‘Spacemusik EP’.
Originally a drummer, Kuhn identifies his early influences in the hyper-rhythmic post-rave experimentalism of Warp Records c.2000, which in turn gave way to a fascination with jungle, dark garage, American hip-hop and the subsequent emergence of dubstep and its many divergences. Today the result is a melting pot of styles in the tradition of wildcard electronic artists such as Luke Vibert, Daedelus, Chris Clark, Squarepusher, and Machinedrum to name a select few.
Kuhn is, in addition, a talented visual artist. Currently focused on the defunct VHS format, Kuhn himself designed the sleeve artwork for ‘Slime Beach EP,’ and his blog features more animated gifs and webart. Importantly, his website www.kuhnmusic.com currently exhibits a dazzling 10min animated background flux soundtracked by a mixtape containing over 15 exclusive original tracks.
‘Slime Beach EP’ is the beginning: it is the first of a series of EPs from the truly multi-talented individual leading towards a full length for Civil Music; home to Starkey, Reso, Drums of Death, Débruit, Om Unit, Darling Farah and more.

Levi Nicoll, pka ‘L Nix’ was born in Edmonton, Alberta, Canada. From an early age L Nix was inspired by music, playing drum kit as well as African drums along with his family, who play in a band. At the age of seventeen L Nix picked up DJing from long time friend Kaylan Barratt (pka Dirty Tactix) and they formed the duo “ORBATAK”. Currently, L Nix has eleven years behind the turntables and many releases under the Orbatak name. Levi’s music has been played by the likes of DZ, Excision, Datsik, Elite Force, Chimpo, Ultrablack, RiskoThéque, Vaski, Liquid Stranger, Mark Instinct, Downlink, Tomba, Borgore, Davr and Ganja White Night to name a few. “BFG” is the first solo release for L Nix, and definitely not the last. NastyNasty’s music is essentially an unpredictable grab bag that always surprises and never disappoints. The Reef, released on Frite Nite, is ultra-compressed, bit-crushed mayhem. Sort of like skweee put through a concrete mixer. Then there is his Planet Mu debut, the No Names 12″, where dancefloor friendly dubstep is re-imagined in his own unique fashion with swathes of harsh frequencies and terrorizing bass.

More recently, NastyNasty has been rolling out a steady stream of productions moving in a restless, quicksilver hip-hop direction. These tracks don‟t stay still for longer than a few bars and unfold rapidly over a few short minutes combining hip hop’s headnod and swing with chest-crushing subs and electronic flavours that make for truly memorable dancefloor jams.All of which leads the man to the “Poison Flavored” EP on Rwina Records. The EP takes NastyNasty’s meticulous sonic aesthetic to new levels of awe. It’s a high definition tale of modern lovers in a land of thieves and hustlers. The EP opens with „Sweaty Bodies‟, coming in at a breakneck 55 bpm! The song twists and churns with washed out vocal chops juxtaposed atop thudding drums. Despite resting on a foundation of rather perverse bass sounds, the song reveals a soft underbelly of sweeping synths and vocal trickery. Expanding on NastyNasty’s more sentimental faire this track stands out as something a bit more… kinky? With „Jelly‟ the Bay Area maestro delivers retro futurism in a hip hop format. NastyNasty flexes analog synth manipulation, cantankerous drum patterns and sub bass worthy of a DMZ dance and makes the whole sound like piloting a spacecraft full of Flash Gordon baddies. Watch the drop, it’s a 360 degree turn that’ll shred the space time continuum. „Hydra‟ starts with atmospheric pads that quickly dissolve into a lone arpeggio before dropping full swing into heavy duty bass. The track journeys through meticulous synth work and ends up changing tempo in a wash of pads and disembodied leads. Last but not least is „Legionnaire‟, a trip of sonic exploration in NastyNasty’s unique style. Legionnaire rises up to the harrowing heights of synthesis and plunges down to the swamp-feeding lows of bass trickery. The only question appropriate being: are you ready?
“Poison Flavored” on Amsterdam’s Rwina Records is the sound of hip-hop from the future far ahead of us: a melting pot of musical influences and electronic experimentation that sends dancefloors wild without compromising on the musicality and emotions.

This is the one people have been waiting for with baited breath! We get tons of messages asking when this is dropping, and now the time is finally upon us. Another great release coming out of the MalLabel Music team as Porkchop delivers his Solarblind EP, out today as a Beatport Exclusive. This 6 track EP contains 4 original Porkchop tunes and 2 remixes of the title track by some of my favourite producers. Vancouver’s Taal Mala and the always so sick production of Stagga. Such a sick EP and easily one of my favourites dubstep releases in the past few months. Boogiemon takes the cake for me, as it delivers a sinister bassline which I cannot help myself but freak out when it drops. Big ups to all involved.

Solarblind EP by PORKCHOP

MalLabel Music’s latest release comes from the efforts of a promising, innovative, and artistic mind with a flare for the dramatic, the dark, and minimal. Porkchop is a unique beat maker with a deep-seated understanding of aesthetics, having had an accomplished career as a graphic designer and illustrator. His aptitude for space and weight carry over into his sonic creations, and his Solarblind EP is a showcase of some brilliant and moody handiwork.

Porkchop, a San Francisco resident, has a smooth signature sound that is suggestive of classic UK dubstep, it is full of deep, rolling synths, and spacey, gloomy ambience. The title track on the EP is a precious and intimate opus that looms and lumbers with a thick, murky throb, a moving piece of work that is both dubby and deep. The track has two rerubs on the EP, a hyped up raga infused remix from powerhoase producer Stagga, and another minimal manipulation by the UK’s masterful Taal Mala. Another of the tracks, “Boogiemon,” is a tense, restrained, and understated romper that chugs and undulates with dance floor attitude. In addition to his solo work, Porkchop’s effort on Solarblind finds him teaming up with LA funk master Digital Rust on “Oozed,” a dark and ominous creeper of a tune, and “Chisel,” perhaps the meatiest and chunkiest of the tracks included on the release.

The Solarblind EP is a solid accomplishment on several fronts: It is due credit for its originality, and Porkchop’s overall intention to create moodiness without detracting from energy is a successful gambit. The release is shadowy and pulsating with super thick vibe. Every track on the EP is worth a go, there isn’t a dance floor from LA to Liverpool that would be able to avoid appreciating its dark, dubby elegance. MalLabel is due kudos for it’s vastly diverse release schedule, and for anyone who has been waiting for the label to satisfy a craving for a more classic or traditional dubstep flavor, this is the release you have been waiting for.

San Francisco based DJ/Producer Porkchop (Benjamin Keyser) has built a rising obelisk of sound stemming from the muscles and chambers of the underground scene into the high gloss swash of the refined dubstep movement above. In addition to his solo offerings, Porkchop contributes to many of the SF bass-fixated conglomerates and operates half of ADSUM with Mikey Fisher (Future Simple Project). His live performances are a mix of heady minimalist dubs and spontaneous compositions, further blurring the lines between DJ, musician, and artist.

Not only is he a killer producer, the best sound designer I know, and probably the biggest breakthrough Dubstep producer out of Montreal but the guy has a killer taste in music. Brand new from the power house of the west coast of Canada, Rottun Records is an EP from renowned bone shaker Subvert (PK sound reppin!) This four track EP contains one Dubstep track surrounded by some good old glitch hop which is synonymous with Subverts name. A collab with Datsik brings up the pain with a Drumstep track to kick the EP. We wouldn’t expect anything but powerful sounds from this outfit. Very well executed as always.

I’m sure you guys all remember a little contest we had going with Betamorph Recordings, Dubstep Records, Filth Collins and JLD a few months ago. Brand new from Rwina Records (JLD x Rwina Mix) is their 14th release by none other then one of the most exciting new producer I’ve had the chance to discover this year, Krampfhaft. I just can’t get enough of his sounds, just check out the clips and read on below.

Krampfhaft – Makin’ Magic EP [RWINA014] by Kr∆mpfh∆ft

The newest release on Rwina comes from Krampfhaft from the label’s homeland of the Netherlands. With only two releases on Hamburg label Saturate to his name, Krampfhaft Rwina debut marks his highest profile release to date, and the Makin’ Magic EP is appropriately, well, big. The Utrecht producer has a synth-heavy sound that’s defined more by its impeccable polish and spacious echo chambers than the kind of ultra-compressed grime pyrotechnics or the filigree rhythm programming for the agile rollers proffered by Rwina recently, but the four tracks here retain the sense of colourful mischief that remains Rwina’s calling card.
Makin’ Magic figures Kramphaft somewhere in between high-tempo hijinks and plastic soul future garage. “I Needed You” and “Carl Sagan The Man” both run at tempos far beyond even the fastest of dubstep variations. “I Needed You” sends stuttering rimshots careening across the horizon, as Krampfhaft layers his whining synths that alternate between shrieks and shudders, as if every so often he’s sticking a rod in between the blindingly fast spokes. “Carl Sagan The Man” explicitly recalls footwork with its slam-and-stop percussive attack and hypnotically winding vocal loops, but it’s again saturated with those hyperventilating synths that take the sometimes-apocalyptic feel of tracks by Spinn and Rashad and turns it into a level of alarm and hysteria that approaches the cartoonish.
The lower tempo tracks are more familiar concoctions: “Hyper Dreaming” is a rather pastel take on the kind of garage and 2step mutations you could expect coming out of producers like Roof Light or Jack Dixon, it has this rather muscular and swung beat with futuristic synth strokes which garners a guaranteed reaction on any dancefloor. The EP closes with its title track, a histrionic ballad full of heartsick synths and chords that swoon dangerously low before swooping back up, leaving behind resplendent trails of melody, and the boasting vocal sample, drenched in reverb, is elevated to near-religious proclamation amidst all the aural drama. It’s an appropriately auspicious release for a Rwina debut, and marks an exciting and sufficiently weirdo addition to an already wonderfully dysfunctional family.
The digi release will come with an extra tune titled ‘Faux Art’.

Hailing from Utrecht, Krampfhaft is the most recent addition to the Rwina crew, and one of its most clever snatch-ups in a while. His name means something like “convulsive,” which fits his spazzy, constantly cycling tracks to a tee. The producer known to friends as Joris van Grunsen debuted on small label Saturate Records with the “Brightly Colored Candy Teardrops” EP, a title which describes it as well as anything ever will. He also had fantastic 7” “Spit Thunder,” where he layered bold synths over speed-addled drums and syrup-drenched vocals. It was a hint to where he’d go in the near future, mincing 8-bit with futurist sound design and all kinds of alien structures. But it’s his first release for Rwina, the freshly-baked Makin’ Magic EP, where Krampfhaft’s genius really comes to light as he incorporates footwork influences — in a manner much smoother than many of his cohorts. On tracks like “I Needed You” he takes the hyperactivity of his debut and turns it into hyper-focus, laser-guided footwork destruction, and on the EP’s title track he constructs a megalomaniac synth eruption complete with overblown pronouncements of grandiosity. With support from Mary Anne Hobbs, Starkey, Gaslamp Killer, and Daedelus, he is a star that’s most certainly on the rise.

On the West Side of the United States is a town that many are familiar with. It is perched precariously, nested in the knee of California, a bright gem jutting out of the land’s end. It is San Francisco, perhaps the most artistically prolific patch of land to ever boast a landmass of only 7 by 7 miles, and it is literally crawling with every kind of artist you can imagine, from the most complex minded beat makers to visionary painters whose brushes splash forth intricate images of sacred geometry and winged minions. Here, in San Francisco, where psychic beaches are combed day in and day out, it can be hard to sift through the sands and locate treasure, but there is one music label hell bent on locating diamonds in the rough, and they are known as MalLabel Music.
           Veteran producer and DJ El Diablo is the latest artist on the label to have been chosen by the divinely guided hand of label owner Mal Harper to showcase his unique brand of underground bass bangers, and the fruit of this labor is a perfectly gorgeous EP called ‘Devil In The Machine.’
           From the opening lazer-bass-belting title track to the last seconds of the 6 track EP, ‘Devil in the Machine’ includes some of the most poignant and original sounds of 2011. Diablo has a signature aesthetic to his production that defies an easy label. His signature synth sound is a squelching formant infected rip tone, his sense of mid range is controlled and vibrant, avoiding completely the bro step midrange so heavily over-utilized in today’s dubstep bangers. His beats reflect a long time love affair with hip hop and break beat culture, and his use of crunchy distortion patches offer a nice juxtaposition.
           Aside from Diablo’s highly original sonic narrative abilities, the remixers on the album are perhaps the strongest pull for the EP. One of the most successful producers of 2011’s highly varied landscape, Liquid Stranger, kicks down an utterly earth-shattering, robo-infused, hype-filled fix up of the title track that will kill any dance floor dead on contact. Next, the dynamic duo Megalodon craft a mix of Diablo’s ‘Ruffer Dan Dem’ that illustrate their absolute and undeniable talent for crafting infectious grooves that can get any ass to wiggle about. Also, teaming up with Diablo for a remix of 6Blocc’s ‘Kultcha’ (released earlier on MalLabel) is San Francisco’s own UFO!, a hard core veteran whose name should be well known to any aficionado of bass.
           El Diablo’s ‘Devil In the Machine’ EP is not only a personal triumph for him, but irrefutable evidence that MalLabel Music has its finger directly on the jugular of dance music on the West Coast. In San Francisco, a virtual anthill of talented producers, one small grass roots crew, captained by the drive for sonic excellence, has a streak several years long of standout releases, and that crew is MalLabel.

Producer, DJ, Instrumentalist El Diablo is a Dubstep & Glitch Hop sorcerer, and his live sets are nothing short of shocking.

A powerful and energetic force on the decks, El Diablo is responsible for MalLabel Music’s biggest selling track, “Rollin With My Crew”.

El Diablo cut his teeth in the electronic world with San Francisco’s acclaimed Dhamaal Soundsystem. The crew’s worldly Drum n Bass sound garnered international attention with their 2004 self-titled debut album.

What a great way to start the week. Dark, murky and full on grime is how I was would describe this 2 track EP which just surfaced on Slit Jockey Digital by J-Sweet. The title track Streethawk features a killer vocal backed by a low riding bass beat, but once again the b-side takes it for me. My guess is both will receive lots of play by myself and lots of others DJs all around.

Doug Surreal:
Doug Surreal entered the dub chambers in the early part of the Detroit electronic music scene back in 1994, playing Live PAs a the original underground parties of the day in notorious punk/electro group “Spaceling & Bassheads” (releases on Interdimensional Transmissions, Intuit Solar). He teamed up with Mike the 2600 King in the early 2000′s releasing Hip Hop instrumental Jeep Beat Dubs on wax with the acid drenched, lofi nightmare “Jack Spaar” releasing on Burlesque of North America. In 2006, the legendary Z-man and Like Sick joined forces with Surreal to create a psychedelic hip hop masterpiece with the twisted “Mortel Crew”. In 2008, Doug Surreal & Carolyn (“oWn” at the time) teamed up and created “Skulltrane”. Surreal produced the original Skulltrane sound from 2008 to 2010, releasing on MalLabel. Since then, Doug has had releases on Badman Press & Betamorph Recordings accompanied by his official remixes for: DZ, Roommate, 6 Blocc, HD 4000, Orbatak & Johnny Bueno to name a few. Various projects are in the works with Alter Echo, dub music legend Mad Professor, and many other influential acts.

Dr I Bio:
Dr. I is an anomaly of tone and person. Way off the grid, his deeply hidden studio (literally) has the mystique of Lee Perry’s Black Arc Studios of the 70s. “Respect and Ting” might be his official first release, but that is because this is the first piece he has been willing to share with the masses. Deeply underground, I spreads vibes, tones and tunes with his Family and brethren. Got another great dubstep techno cross over release that I’ve been sitting on for a while now. I meant to share this with you guys when it came out, but It seemed like I was too busy playing these on the radio to actually sit down and make a post.

So here we go. Coming out from France’s F4TMusic we’ve got Shinigami San‘s Toys EP. An intricate exploration of bass and rhythms creeping along the sides of techno, 8-bit, and noise aesthetics. Tunisia has never been a referent place in the electronic music world. It was better known for its beaches and hot weather, hardly for its political regime but the events of 2011 brought quite some changes about that. These changes have been nurturing in the underground of the country until exploding to the face of the world, with fantastic momentums of rebellion, courage and union.

Shinigami San’s album is a signal that emanates from the underground of Tunisia: a hybrid of dubstep, techno and noise; very dark, but most importantly, very true. This is neither the sound of London nor Berlin, and if a couple of ingredients from here and there are recognizable in “Toys”, it is most defnitely the electronic sound of Tunisia we bring to you here.

From the dusty 8-bit dubstep of “Lofi” and “Toys” to the dark techno rollers “Post Trauma” and “Migra”, you will go by tribal beats, eerie atmospheres and heavily distorted sound textures. Shinigami San draws a panorama that shows both impressive skills and style.

“Toys” is not only about excellent and true music, but also about original product design and DIY manufacturing. This 450 digipack limited edition was hand-printed and crafted using silk screen printing, rulers and cutters. The graphic design is based on drawings from Sabrina Ben Hadj Ali, and each cd comes numbered, with 3 original prints on the graphic theme of the album.

Today, we are up to put Tunisia under the radar of electronic beats diggers; today, we bring you the first album of Tunisian- born Shinigami San: nothing cheesy here, just a raw, brutally honest energy.

I’ve been steady blogging about Concrete Cut for a bit now, a Polish bass label who tickled my ears a few releases ago with their phenominal future garage EP from Tom Encore. The follow up release by Rhythm Baboon got us moving in a darker, more vast bass landscape then before grabbing attention from big taste makers such as XLR8R. This next EP keeps the ball rolling for this young outfit, now on to their 10th release with this beautiful bass filled EP from Deam marking the debut release for this up and comer. Merging garage, dubstep and techno into a smooth blend of bass, fans of Ikonika, Martyn and George Fitzgerald will want to stand up and take notice. Free download included at the bottom on the post. Polish bass label Concrete Cut returns this October, for another season of electronic explorations kicking off with Square Love EP, the debut solo release of Warsaw-based producer Deam. After years of sonic experimentations and collaborations (including an ongoing project with Warsaw producer Fau of the Mustnotsleep collective), this fresh-faced beatmaker has already managed to develop a distinctive, modern sound, coupling deep, synth-led grooves with his signature swinging beats.

The six tracks of Square Love have already garnered Deam comparisons to the likes of Ikonika through his bright, crunchy leads. The EP’s sparse vocal sampling and shuffling garage-inspired beats are reminiscent to the Hotflush appearances of George Fitzgerald and Lando Kal, or the dub-tech sound of Martyn. Across Square Love, Deam has presented a mature, effortless artistic statement, marking a bright future for this undoubtedly talented young producer.

Born in Warsaw, Deam (AKA Michał Lewicki) is currently based in the town of Zielonka just outside of Poland’s capital. After years of making music at home, his focus is now on researching new methods of digital synthesis and creating a unique, individual workflow for music production. The dynamic sound of Deam is currently making its way to the public ear…

As a solo live act, Deam performs with the aid of Ableton and hardware samplers/grooveboxes. Since spring 2011, he has collaborated live and in the studio with Warsaw producer Fau from the Mustnotsleep collective.

Supreme & Megalodon Mix for The Afterparty on C89.5FM by Supreme

The next label dropping a mix for our JLDx series is still pretty new to the block but I can say with ease that it’s been one of my favorites since the start. Coming in from Amsterdam with 17 releases under their belt is Rwina Records mixed by Akkachar.

In my opinion a great label should have a good ear for new sounds, a good eye for spotting the right artist and the guts to put out music they believe in, Rwina does just that. I’ve been rinsing releases by Rwina starting off with #01, Starkey’s Just A. They’ve racked up a killer line up of names since then, signing great producers such as Taz Buckfaster, Eprom, Noah D, Terror Danjah, Swindle, Doshy, Desto, etc. Simply put: straight up killing it!

LABEL PROFILE:

Rwina Records is a new label out of Amsterdam distributed by Triple Vision and ST Holdings. In Moroccan, rwina means “never ending chaos”, and not sticking to the script is exactly what the label is about: pushing the global bass music scene’s boundaries further away from the center. Call it what you want in your own corner of the world, but there’s a global music scene growing… and it’s everything bass.

BIO BLIPS:

The ever-growing RWINA family is an international affair and includes a number of smaller names hob-nobbing with the big ones. Kicking things off with a nutso release by Starkey early off in his exploding career and continuing on with two hypercolour dub manifestos by the Glaswegian Taz Buckfaster and some nightmarish hip-hop from Playdoe, Rwina has gone all-out for 2010 with a blitz of jaw-dropping releases from Starkey, Eprom, SRC, Noah D, Terror Danjah and Rachet. Rwina expanded the diverse catalogue with Swindle, Bloom, 501, Doshy, Desto and another EP by Eprom in 2011.

Every single one of Rwina’s releases up to this point are worth getting, and each live in their own tie-dye world, a world as gloriously detailed and awe-inspiring as the eye-catching label artwork — seriously, some of these labels have to be seen to be believed. Couple that with a reliable ear for only the best tracks and you’ve got yourself a formidable set of twelves that would be hard to rival by any other label.

We would like to take a moment to introduce you all to our friend Liam Wachs aka Wachs Lyrical. We asked him a ’6-Pack’ of questions so you can get to know him on a more personal level and this is what he had to say.

1. Q. Where were you born?
A. This may come as a bit of a surprise to anyone thats met me and heard my very British accent, but I was actually born in Los Angeles before my parents moved to the UK when I was 7 months old.

2. Q. When did you first get into electronic dance music?
A. I first got into electronic music when I was 16 on a holiday in Scotland. My friend and now musical partner in my House alias (Aartekt) John Williamson played me Fonzerelli – Moonlight Party. That song defined what was an amazing summer for me and started my love of EDM.

3. Q. What other types of music influence your production style?
A. I don’t really know where I would point that finger, but I can tell you that when I am listening to music on my ipod or at home, it is generally quite funky, folk and blues based. Lately a lot of Steeley Dan, Quincy Jones and Nathan Reich.

4. Q. What is your favorite color of m&m?
A. Blue for sure. I don’t really know why the other ones are there to be honest…

5. Q. If you were stranded on a deserted Island, what musical instrument would you want to have with you?
A. I would definitely have a piano with me. I think the piano has the largest possible range of emotion that can be pulled out of it, so it would never really get old.

6. Q. Any shout outs?
A. As always, gotta give a shout out to Akilles who kills it each and every. Everyone over at Electric Sound Stage Radio. Finally giving a shout out to the rents who imbued me with the musical obsession I have today.

DUB FX is a worldwide street performer and studio recording artist from St Kilda, Melbourne, Australia. His trademark is creating rich live music using only his voice aided by Live looping and effect pedals. Dub’s music really gained momentum when Bristol film maker BD filmed “Love Someone” on the street and posted it on his Youtube account. 9 million views later Dub has travelled to all far reaches off the globe to perform with his fiancée Flower Fairy.

Dub has several releases out, “Live in the Street” a collection of street performances from his travels busking through Europe in his Van, A remastered double album “Everythinks A Ripple / RMX” which combines his first studio album repackaged with a Remix album showcasing various producers.
