It’s been a well over 1 year since the last time I rolled up my sleeves and prepared a mix for this podcast series, JLD #81 being my last one back in November 2010. Lots as change in the world of Dubstep since 2010. Sub-categories have sprawled out and the market has exploded. Skrillex in everything and everywhere, including a new remake of The Crow with Mr.S in the main spotlight. Most of all, my taste in music has evolved and changed a lot but my focus on bass has not as you’ll see with the straight up Dubstep mix. Ready to shake up some dust.

Enjoy this mix featuring extra rumbles from the likes of Truth, Mr Levi, Daisy-Chain, even some Wally and Lunice from some Montreal swag. Big big ups to Dub Cartel Recordings for keeping me fresh as always.

Let’s get weird!!!! Time to drop some pants and have fun. With this in mind I’d like to present to you some of my favourite Bass Mutations for summer 2012, including weird bass, something closely resembling Dubstep, Juke-ish tempos and actually Juke & Jungle. Construct – Dubstep Mix – Live at Le Belmont, MTL – 12th Planet’s End is Near Tour

It’s been far too long since I released a Dubstep mix, probably close to 3 or 4 months. Surrounded by a world of Brostep I had almost lost faith in Dubstep until I went to see N-type & Hatcha at Bassmentality in Toronto a little while back. I came back from that show with a new found joy for Dubstep and how powerful it can be without being over the top & desperate for attention.

So I took it upon myself on Valentine’s Day to bust out a set of pure dubstep love for anyone in early attendance, too bad the PK subs didnt come on until the Headliners cause I think I could have knocked the place down with these tunes.

Enjoy the mix. It turned out great considering that the sound tech kept unplugging my booth monitor and turning the sound on and off trying to trouble shoot the insane amount of gear on the stage.

As always, big thanks to the Dub Cartel Recordings crew for supplying me with the illest tracks around.

Last night, I was invited to come down to PROJECT, a newly formed bi-monthly Juke, UKG, Bass night at Blizzarts in Montreal. At the helm on this event is two of our TwerkIt.net crew members, Hesk & Paveun along side HGLDT, Son Raw and Rob Carle.

I had tons of fun mixing and dancing behind the decks, although I felt like i was having a footwork battle against myself while spinning. I couldn’t stop myself. Anyway, my sound-card screwed up the recording, so I recorded it once again using the same track list (mixes might differ).

Bench Igloofest Competition + Construct’s Mix

This is quite big. Win an opening spot at this winter’s Igloofest in Montreal! If you’ve not heard about Igloofest yet, here is a little info about it.

This year will be the 6th edition of Igloofest in Montreal, a 9 night outdoor freezing cold wicked awesome fun time with headlining DJs from around the world. The nights span over the last 3 weekends of January (Thursdays, Fridays & Saturdays) and attract around 10,000 people each night! (Brought to us by the fine people at Piknic Elektronique)

This year, we are very excited to learn that MALA will be the main act of the opening night, followed by Pearson Sound, Buraka Som Sistema and many, many other great acts on the following nights (mostly in the house, techno branch of things). It’s a wicked fun time out in the cold of night, with thousands of people jumping around in the wildest snow gear imaginable.

Well this year, Igloofest and Bench have teamed up to offer a round trip to Montreal, $1000 in Bench gear and of course a coveted opening slot of the main stage of the festival!

All you have to do is read the instruction of course, and submit your 30min mix to mixcloud with all the proper tags and guidelines. Any style of music is welcomed, so stress your flex a little and see what you can come up with!

I’ve already submitted my own mix and I suggest you all to do the same. It’s a great chance for you to be seen and listened to by people of all demographics and taste.

Last night rocked! I mean, we always have a good time when we’re hanging at Le Belmont, but last night was sick!! In the place was Alpha Pup artist and Low End Theory resident, Jonwayne. The crowd was taken away by his set which was all performed using only a Roland SP404sx. Rather impressive in my standards.

I had the joy of following up after such a big performance with the graveyard shift. I tried to follow a similar vibe but with my own twist. A few bumps and bruises along the way but that’s the fun of a good live show.

Big ups to Low-Life.ca and Dubmachine + Bouddha Slinky for making this happen.

UNLOg Podcast #6 – Construct

Today my new mix came out for the UNLOg Podcast series, a blog dedicated to Wonky, Chipset, IDM and other obscure beats. They’re main operation come out of France but they have collaborators all over the place including Montreal.

Last night I was invited to play an opening set before Data Romance’s live performance at CFC in Montreal. For those who don’t know yet, Data Romance is a duo made up of Ajay & Amy both from Victoria BC, now living in Vancouver BC. They’re sound is hard to pin point. Somewhere in between a lush garage shuffle, and some indie electro act teamed up with beautiful vocal work from Amy. Anyway, that left me baffled about what to play before such an act to say the least, so I tried to play it as calm as possible…. it didn’t quite work out that way.

The recording was for myself but turned out quite nice, so here it is for you all to enjoy.

Tonight I launch my new weekly spot on NASTY.FM, home of MAC10, the Nasty crew & of course Montreal’s E.S.L Overnight Saturday with Bus, Bowly & Skinnybones.

A few weeks back, I had the chance to fill in for the Montreal trio as they went out to celebrate Bowly’s bachelor party. I archived the session and I’m now releasing it for download. This mix showcases the type of feeling my wednesday night show will have. Grime, UKG, Bass, 808s and experimental beats, in short it’s gonna be lots of fun!

Construct is easily one of the hardest working individuals that I know. He is a constant pusher of all the bass through so many mediums that I can’t imagine how he finds time to keep up with it all.

He is one of the two main men behind J’aime le Dubstep, runs a successful Tuesday night radioshow on Dubstep.FM, DJ’s regularly in Montreal and is also a great graphic designer. A man of many talents with an impecable taste in music. Known for rinsing out the best in dubstep, jungle, uk funky and various other bassy music, his sets are guaranteed movers with an ability to deliver the face melters or keep it deep and subby.

I’m really stoked to be dropping this mix as the last post before I take off on holidays, a parting gift of sorts as there won’t be much activity on the site for about two weeks. This mix gonna be part of my collection of travel mixes; another great one to add to the list of good tunes to bump while driving to your festival destination. Between the gangsta wonk opening the mix to the super dubby throughout the middle onto the juke at the end; this mix delivers.

Construct was also kind enough to provide a bit of a backstory on this mix for us:

“It’s basically my set from Evolve minus the last 30mins of slammers and facemelters. It has some of my favourite tunes from the past year and of the moment, with a big focus on making people dance and enjoy the sun.”

Live A/V Set that was broadcasted and recorded last Monday night at the DJWEB.TV studio here in Montreal. The great guys at Monkey Dub Records, host of Monkey Mondays were nice enough to invite me over to spin for their show, with a nice long timeslot. So, no rushing around trying to fit in multiples types of sounds in a 30min set. Over 2hr to myself to play some vinyl and digital tunes.

Lots of great tracks inside, featuring big players such as Addsion Groove, Bodika, James Blake, Geoff Bukk, JSaxton, Untold, etc, etc. I think you can really see an influence in sounds coming into my crates via BoilerRoom.TV (fucking love this podcast series). Anyway, this was a great chance to flex and play something I don’t get to play in bars or raves much. Fun times, except 1 needle not cuing properly on a few vinyls, but nothing that’s gonna bring me down.

I’ll add the audio download and add an embed video link in a short bit.

Construct – Mushpost’s Grime Brick Radio Mix

A few weeks ago I was asked to prepare a guest mix for Mushpost’s Grime Brick Radio show which airs Monday nights on WRUV 90.1FM in Burlington Vermont. The Mushpost crew have been responsible for bringing an A list of producers to Burlington which often leave me salivating and wishing I could make the trip to catch the show. Names such as Eprom, Chrissy Murderbot, Truth, Beats Antique, Jakes, Montreal’s Future Garage beacon HGLDT of Swing & Skip Records and many more.

On another front, Mushpost have been working hard to building ties between Vermont and Montreal, working with MTL based artist such as Geoff Bukk, Living~Stone and Elo!i & Heights just to name a few. Catch their exclusive Grime Brick mixes on their mixcloud page. Link below.

The Grime Brick Series is an exposition of the various underground electronic music scenes and their uniformity through bass. Every Monday at 10pm EST on 90.1 WRUV FM (http://www.wruv.org) Mushpost asks a worthy DJ or producer, either local or touring, to identify & represent their sound within this burgeoning global scene via an hour-long live mix. They are recorded and then posted the following Wednesday here.

My mix aired last week and is still in the process of being added to their mixcloud page, so until then I’m gonna post up the mix here to download (updated link posted asap). I hope you guys enjoy the mix, it’s an effort from myself to showcase more bass and new vibes going around in the scene.

Vilify & Construct Live Set from Piknic Electronik – July 18 2010

The sun is warm again, summer is creeping up, and Montreal is waking up. I can already feel the energy building for what seems to be a great festival season in our lovely city. Mutek just announced their killer lineup featuring a live performance from Amon Tobin, full on Vancouver Lighta! crew representation from Michael Red to Daega Sound System. Babe Rainbow, Xi, Falty DL and the list goes on.

Even more exciting is the prospect of another AH-mazing season for Piknic Electronik, Montreal’s best summer jewel. Pikic, for those who aren’t familiar is an open air, sunday afternoon/evening event which happens every week of the summer on Park Jean-Drapeau. This family friendly event is THE best thing going on sundays – Tam Tams is still very cool. People of all variety come together to dance and chill in the sun, consume some delicious beer, bagette and brie.

Last year, Vilify and myself were honored to be invited to spin along side Bassnectar, our friends LivingStone & Vipond (Dig-it-aL) and Lexis (musicismysanctuary.com) for what seemed to be the biggest and brightest day of the year! Everything was wonderful, including the super friendly staff from the Piknic crew (<3 you all).

Anyway, it gives me chills to listen to this live recording of our set and I hope you will enjoy as equally. Big thanks to Piknic for having picked our set out of countless other top notch producers and deejays who have graced their wonderful stage.

If you aren't from Montreal but live not too far, I strongly suggest that you fill up a few cars and make a road trip to one of these events.

The submissions have been slack these pass few weeks, so this week I offer to you guys a Live recording from a Dubstep vs Breaks night a few weeks ago at Forward Music (every thursday at club Passport, Montreal). I shared the stage with fellow bass head LAZERFACE going against Breaks heavyweights Dialect and Pinky38 in rounds of 45mins.

I’m sure you guys know the results, DUBSTEP MURDERED!!!!! (imo and from the dancefloor results). This night/set was epic, I’m very happy Wally (Forward Resident and promoter) captured my set.

2 weeks ago, i purchased a bunch of liquid for a radio show with Method and Timmy Tables (buckbangner), well 10 -15 tracks actually. Since i payed a bunch of money i felt as if i needed to record a mix with most of them, so i can put them to bed.

This is just a quick mix, nothing is planned. My focus was simply to stay in the mix as much as possible, so most of the mixes are live drops. A few tracks are launch more then once in the mix (thanks to my trigger finger).

Hi. Here is the recording from my past gig on Valentine’s Day.

Opening for ill.Gates was a blast. I’ve been a fan for a long time. Everything went great, except for the tonearm bouncy off the record at one point and my trigger finger falling on the dance floor, but lucky it didn’t trigger anything that was live. It was great to meet a few of you, i just wish i had a better memory when it comes to names. Thanks to Bedlam and Mitch for everything.

So, I decided to hit up another fill in show on Saturday, which I think I will be doing again soon, with a special guest Feb 14th in studio if everything goes to plan.

The mix starts with some chilled dubstep and bass, leads into hard dubstep then into hard drum’n'bass and jungle to end. I was planning on keeping it relaxed the entire show, but a listener convinced me to step it up hard…. well it wasn’t too hard to convince me to do such.

Dub Sessions Vol 1 w/ Construct & DVD live in Hell

This is the recording from our first all dubstep event in Halifax.
Everything went well, except my one of my faders broke off my mixer
with 20mins to go in the night but it was a blast and well worth it!

I wish i had a track listing for this mix, but we don’t sorry.
Lots of heavy heavy dubstep and a bunch of classics from 2008.
We tagged by 30 mins w/ DVD to start, then 1 for 1 for the last 30mins.

I just started a new job and my last term at University this week.
So before heading back to working 50 some hours a week I decided
to blow off some steam by spinning a bunch of tracks at random.

The outcome is an hour long dubstep mix which covers a lot of different styles and sounds.
Some mixes are fast, some are live drops & I’ve got a few live loops.
Nothing special, just a good time for myself really.
