BIO BLIPS:

After composing different electronic styles like Hip Hop, Breaks and Drum&Bass, the two group members have been extremely influenced by a musical style in a fully emergence at the time : dubstep, music centre on “Bass Wobbling” while trying to stay away as much as possible from clichés that this style may impose.

For their live performance the group decided to plan a live arrangements allowing them to be creative and efficient combining machines, laptops, midi master keybords, all kinds of regulators, samplers, sequencers, processing effects and recently IPads. Yet the ground is bound to develop their skills as DJ’s in order to diversify and be more flexible. Thanks to this the group is now more approachable for all types of scenes throughout the world.

All two members are self-taught, and they’ve studied electro-acoustic with Annette Vande Gorne at Le Conservatoire Royal of Mons (Belgium). Learning about Musique Concrète and sound design completely shaped Ganja White Night’s music in a totally unique way.

Their first album; which digitally came out in February of 2010 is a compilation of all the LP’s they had previously released, along with a couple exclusive new songs. They’ve self released everything they’ve ever recorder, label that goes under the name of Subcarbon Records.

LeBelgeElectrod was in the band until he left in february 2012. The album is featured in many online stores around the world such as iTunes (US, EUR, CAN, AU, UK, JAP), Amaon, Juno Download, Napster or Rhapsody; with the US being the country where it’s been the most successful. The songs Peace By Fear and Blueberry are the best selling tracks.

This next mix is from a new(ish) artist who is causing quite a ruckus in the dubstep scene (read: non-brostep) with his own signature dark and somber sounds which hits you like massive bass waves. A guy who definitely ended the year on my list of artist to watch in 2012 – JLD #159 by Benton is ready and served with a side of extra heavy bass, a little Garage, some Grime and a few classics to kick up the spice!

I suggest you roll one up, grab a coffee and start off your day in a dubstep haze (if applicable… not suggested at the office, or police station, or funeral homes) Personally, I’m keeping this mix on repeat until we unleash JLD #160.

Well, well… Our servers are back up and we are now ready to unleash one of the biggest mixes if not the biggest one of 2012; a good way to start off the year I might add. BIO BLIPS:

Omega is a bass music producer and DJ, currently residing in Denver, Colorado, US. He first discovered electronic music through the big beat, IDM, and industrial scenes during the late ’90s, and bought his first pair of turntables in 2000. Over the years his tastes have also included jungle, progressive breaks, psychedelic trance, and dub – and in the last couple of years have settled into dubstep and related forms of bass music. Though DJing will always hold a special place in his heart, recently writing and producing tunes has become Omega’s primary obsession.

Omega performances are a hybrid between a DJ set and a live performance – using a laptop running Ableton Live, with several MIDI controllers, effects processors, and synths. An Omega set will always include many original tunes, remixes, edits, and mashes, with a heavy emphasis on live improvisation and manipulation. His energy and stage presence, combined with his monster tunes, inevitably whip a crowd into a frenzy of bassed out bliss. He has shared the stage with: EOTO, Liquid Stranger, Vaski, Eskmo, The Malah, Cold Blank, Bird of Prey, Trillbass, Roksonix, Virus Syndicate, NiT GriT, Calvertron, and many more.

Omega tunes blend the most raw and aggressive aspects of dubstep – snarling synth sounds and organ churning sub-bass – with a careful attention to sound design and elegant use of melody, creating a sound that is at once primal, funky, and psychedelic. Racking up nearly half a million plays on his Soundcloud profile, and getting DJ support from the likes of Liquid Stranger, Jantsen, Samples, Sugarpill, Love + Light, Future Simple Project, The Crystal Method, Zeno, and many others, it’s clear that Omega is a force to be reckoned with in the bass music scene.

2010 saw numerous original and remix releases on various labels, including an Omega remix on The Crystal Method’s “Sine Language” Remix EP. 2011 will bring many more official remixes and singles, several EPs, his first vinyl release, some epic collaborations, and an extensive touring schedule.

Yan Zombie, member of the “REALLY GOOD” family and producer/mc for future-rap crew Cyphanex; is a musical enigma and modern day renaissance man whose audio influences and explorations cross many styles and genres. Everything from quick-mix funk, soul and hip hop, to the baddest dub and glitch-step to heavy metal electro to futuristic badman dancehall grime and bashment; sometimes in the same song. His live PA/Ableton electronic shows consist of original cutting edge crunk production, combined with on the fly mashups and micro mixing – sometimes dropping parts of almost 100 songs in a 90 minute set.

His latest mixes have been posted on San Francisco’s avant glitch imprint Daly City Records blog site and Yan is referred to by Ninja Tune heavyweight DJ Vadim as “A Bad Motherfucker cooking up crack with the Moog synthesizer.” Able to count world class DJs like Mat The Alien, Mochipet and Vadim as fans and collaborators, the Zombie’s buzz is starting to build. 10 years deep in the producing game; having toured 7 countries with acts such as Abstract Rude, Mat The Alien and Emotionz – with whom they became the first Canadian hip hop/grime unit to play Romania, Austria and Hungary in 2007.

In June 2011, Yan Zombie releases his full length instrumental album ‘THE HOLD-ON TIGHT: ANALOGUE SLICES OF LOVE AND CONFUSION’ (Digital Punchout!), smashing genre boundaries between glitch, soul and hip hop. Look for an upcoming EP on Propa Tingz’ & The Outlier’s imprint True Movement: ‘Habitual Line-Stepper,’ a heavy dose of raw psychedelic crunk and futuristic purple. There will also be a release for Daly City in the next 6 months… as well as remixes of/collabs with MC ZULU, Neighbor, Emotionz, Stylust, DJ Vadim, Bassnectar, Ill Gates, Mat The Alien, Mochipet, Chad Van Gaalen, Yeah Yeah Yeahs, and a slew of bootlegs for dancefloor mayhem and psychedelic headphone candy. BIO BLIPS:

Reid Speed has been a dancefloor destroyer for over a decade and is recognized worldwide for her skillful ability to throw down all genres of bass music in transcendental manner. Since 2001 she has released a consistent stream of well received mix compilations and a slew of well charting original and group productions and remixes of many genres: drum & bass, 2 step, breaks, fidget house, electro, dubstep and even moombahcore. She is now most known for helming the Play Me Records and Play Me Too brands. 2011 saw her produce and co-headline the US portion of the groundbreaking Play Me Records Bass Monster Tour with FS & Cyberoptics, which received a tremendous Stateside response and was sponsored by Beatport. The tour spawned a #2 charting hit of the same name (“Bass Monster”) by Reid & FS as well as their “Pussy Weed Money” Remix of “Die Famous” for Burn the Fire which also clocked in at #2. The success of the US portion of the tour has resulted in an upcoming Play Me Bass Monster Europe Tour, which will lead the brand and Speed to Europe in 2012 with Dubsidia, The Unik and Tha Trickaz.
In just over 2 years, Play Me Records and Play Me Too have indisputably taken the Beatport charts by storm, with a string of #1, top 10s, and nearly every release charting in the top 100. They have broken more new artists than any other label of its kind, helping to launch the careers of artists like Cyberoptics, FS, J. Rabbit, Run DMT, Twist, Bassex, Dubsidia, and Bare, to name just a few. 2010 saw Play Me Records voted Dubstep Label of the Year by Beatport and Symphonic Distribution.
Reid got her start in the New York City underground working behind the counter at the legendary Breakbeat Science record store. A chance trip to the UK in the summer of ’97 led to her love affair with 2 step and speed garage. As one of the first US DJs to champion these genres (which morphed into todays’s fidget house and dubstep), both Reid and Play Me’s steady climb come as no surprise to those who know her history. Soon after she began DJing full time she was holding residencies with Stuck on Earth, Direct Drive & Camouflage while in college at the School of Visual Arts. Producing tracks for and with likes of Ming & FS and Le Tigre came along soon after, along with involvement in a seminal series of parties that introduced artists like Deekline, MJ Cole, & Stanton Warriors to the NYC underground. Signing to Breakbeat Science’s label in 2001, she released her first mix “Resonance” to much critical acclaim, and successfully followed it up with 2003′s “Life After Dark.” On subsequent tours with Om artists Ming & FS and Colette, and on her own CD release tours, she has honed her precise genre mashing mixing skills and developed a synergy with her crowds that is unmatched. Those who have listened to her mixes or seen her live agree, whether controlling the floor, in the studio, or behind the decks, Reid pushes the music forward every step she takes.

So here we go! I’ve been wanting a mix from these guys since the first track of theirs i hear. Coming hard and strong from Toronto we’ve got The Killabits in for JLD #149! This canadian duo has been making LOTS of noise in the scene for the past 2 years, 2011 being their biggest year to date. Teamed up with Zeds Dead, they are at the helm of Bassmentality. A crazy intense wednesday night weekly event held at Wrongbar. I was lucky enough to be invited to share the spot light at this event, and it goes without saying that people love their ruffneck bass a whole lot at Bassmentality. Pretty much every single week features an international artist at the top spot. But that being said, a successful weekly event is at the bottom of their achievements list. I can’t even begin to sum up the success they’ve had in 2011, so I’ll let the bio do the rest. You guys read up a bit, and get your ears ready for this!

Since Halloween of 1987, ALERT has established himself and his artistic branding/vision with over 23 years’ worth of experience both as a graffiti artist and as a musician.

Ten years later, on Halloween of 1997, he branched out into the realm of electronic music by becoming a DJ. Playing tech house and jungle/drum & bass records led him towards the production end of the musical spectrum, and he began producing his own tracks at the beginning of 2003. Since 2004, he has been playing/performing live sets comprised of original tracks, using his trusty laptop.

He has released tracks on Dope Recordings, Rope Swing Cities, Archipel, Filthy Digital, Section 8 and Strange Town Recordings; as well as his own label, Oblivion Fringe, which was established in 2006.

He currently produces dubstep, drum & bass and techno.

Starting off Halloween week we’ve got JLD #141 by Westerley. From the West Coast of Canada, Westerley brings us a mix which has a great blend of new and old. A snippet of a live set performed at Carrington Bay this year, re-recorded at home from his serato history. This mix reaches all over the place, a quality I tend to enjoy quite a bit and I hope you do to.

BIO BLIPS:

From Lasqueti Island on the West Coast of Canada, Westerley has been playing and producing bass heavy music for over a decade. Starting at a very young age Westerley has played countless parties, festivals (including Shambhala, Bass Coast, Soundwave, VEMF, and Diversity) and club nights alongside a massive list of well known artists such as Pendulum, Dj Fresh, Shimon, Chase & Status, Bassnectar, Eskmo, Freq Nasty, Liquid Stranger, Shy Fx, Deekline, The Freestylers, Grooverider, SS, Dj Zinc, Spoonbill, Gaudi, Twilight Circus, and many many others including opening for Dj Craze & Armanni Reign in Tallinn, Estonia.
As of late Westerley has been focusing on the deeper, more minimal side of dubstep but you can expect to hear pretty much anything if the time is right.
For 2011 he saw his first release on RFR, took on running the Beach Stage at Diversity Festival on Texada Island and had a solidly booked schedule of shows.

After such a big release from last week’s Cotti mix, what could we do to keep this momentum? Why not release a mix by one of the pillars of North America’s best labels producing some of the most bright, innovative, fresh sounding “dubstep”. Co-founder of Seclusiasis, and father of Street Bass along side Starkey, Dev79 bring us this week’s JLD mix #140. I remember first hearing of Dev79 when learning about Starkey’s Street Bass movement way back in ’06. I still remember hearing “From the Get” for the first time, and thinking I had never heard anything like it. It went beyong conventional dubstep at the time and focused on building a raw bass riddim like no other, panning from left to right and making heads bop around. Anyway, enough said. Philadelphia’s brazen Dev79, aka Gair Marking, has been bangin’ out the underground sounds for years. With an almost reckless abandon he attacks a barrage of genres (from UKG to Grime to Tropical to Dubstep to Rap and whatever the fuck else) to create his spin on the Street Bass style. He’s done recent remixes for +Verb, Raffertie, DZ, Starkey, BD1982, Gobs the Zombie, Guttstar, Mestizo, Dmn Days, and is soon to present a mixtape for up and coming r&b/reggae singer Sheba as well as working on a collab EP with Seattle’s Thrills (Sub Philo Music). Dev79 and Starkey are the masterminds behind the Seclusiasis empire and Street Bass Anthems series, as well as the Slit Jockey Records imprint with partner El Carnicero.

Cotti is the founder of SumtingNew Records aswell as Bassface records which released “Calm Down” in 2008. Cotti has travelled the world through over 20 different countries playing his own unique style of Dubstep & has support from the likes of Skream & Benga, Chase & status, Caspa, Rusko, Joker, MistaJam, MaryanneHobbs, Hatcha & Dmz to name a few.

Cotti has also released a Label Album on SUMTINGNEW Reocrds which is out now on iTunes & will be available on CD late may 2011. Get ready to expand your minds and look backwards to a time past. Starting off the weekend we’ve got Montreal’s own Hissy Fit (aka Matthew Hiscock) bringing us JLD #137. Featured earlier this year at the world famous, forward thinking Mutek music festival for a live performance and also picking up a nod from XLR8R for his production, Hissy Fit is lined up for a great year.

Now this mix isn’t like most mixes that we feature on the podcast, and I’ll let Hissy Fit tell why:
This is a mix of breaks 2001-2006, or Nu Skool Breaks as some people called it. A lot of people talk about UKG spawning Dubstep, and there’s certainly something to that, but there was also a lot of overlap between the UKG and Breaks scenes in the early 2000s. Some people called FWD a breaks night in those early years, before the halfstep sound really took over.

In two weeks we’re featuring a second mix by Hissy Fit containing all original tunes. A great mix which shows us just why Mutek requested his presence at the festival.

“Working with sound is like sculpting stone – you’ve got to destroy it a little to get anywhere!” jokes Newfoundland-born dj/producer Matthew Hiscock, also known as Hissy Fit. With tracks released digitally and on vinyl on Car Crash Set, Phuturelabs and the new Swing & Skip Records, he’s gotten play on the UK’s RinseFM and KissFM and received multiple mentions in XLR8R magazine. TrebleSum is a bass Producer / DJ around the western canadian scene. Coming from a background of Downtempo and Psytrance TrebleSum eventually found his main home in the Dubstep / Glitch-hop / Drum n Bass scene.

in 2010 TrebleSum released 2 tracks on the Calgary label RFR. He also started his own label called Tycho Records which saw the release of the trio The Kokiri Kids (TrebleSum, Womkat & Soundbwoy murdah). Since the birth of Tycho Records they have seen releases by world renowned artists such as Blue Lunar Monkey, Minnesota, Omega, J.me.J and more.

BIO BLIPS:

Having grown up listening to Detroit Techno and progressively moving through electronic music, Irish bass music producer DROKKR took up production around 4 years ago. In his music you can hear him taking influences from a 17 year love affair with electronic music. Having played around with DJing before taking up production which steadily moved towards a live show. The live show that he currently brings to the table is one full of driving beats, quirky percussion and solid heavy duty bass.

Momentum is steadily building behind DROKKR and his music. Seeing plenty of radio support from DJs such as Starkey on BBC 1xtra and SubFM and from No Yeah No & Warlock, Threnody Mad EP and Valta on SubFm. There is now also series of mixes and live recordings for various blogs and radio shows are in the currently in the pipeline to coincide with the launch of his own website, blog and the forthcoming releases.

With the wheels fully in motion now,2011 is shaping up nicely With a string of releases lined up for the coming months. As the rest of the year pans out, things are looking to get even busier for Drokkr and his music. The prolific producer seems to be able to move between genres little effort while constantly pushing his boundries and all the while evolving his own unique sound.

Starting off the week with JLD #132 from San Francisco, we’ve got Babylon System’s Roommate. Certainly no stranger to the scene locally at home and far abroad, Roommate has been far to busy at work for me to sum it up in my little 50 word blurb. BIO BLIPS:

San Francisco based artist ROOMMATE (Justin McCauley) has a musical career that can be described as prolific and ever changing. His tireless efforts in both production and DJ’ing have currently brought him to the forefront of the worldwide bass music community. With over a decade of solid DJ’ing and countless original production releases, you can be sure Roommate has secured his title on an international scale.

Beginning his musical quest with guitar lessons at the age of 11, Roommate has since developed his craft to an undeniable style and fashion by intergrating both organic and electronic sounds. After self releasing his first solo album (Dubfunk vol1) in 2003, he quickly gained musical notiriety in the U.S. counter culture. When dubstep first hit the U.S. streets, Roommate was quick to find a love and understanding for the music and began production. Joining forces with L.A. based artist and long time friend No Thing, the two formed another key part of dubstep history; Babylon System. Roommate / Babylon System contributed many of the early U.S. dubstep releases such as “50 Blocks Away”,” Examination of TIme”, and “Loaded” to name a few. After a slew of quality releases, Roommate was sky rocketed into the international limelight. Years of global touring followed with undying passion and intensity at every show.

Co founding the rip roaring label Hollow Point Recordings with friend and artist SPL was another huge step for Roommate. Gaining confindence from consistant releases and great sales, Roommate used Hollow Point to push the boundaries of sound and express his musical tastes. Following Hollow Point, Roommate branched out to creat two new musical imprints. King Dubbist and Avocaudio are Roommate’s latest forward thinking incarnations. Focusing on huge vibes and stellar production, these labels span from Dubstep to Trip-hop to Reggae. Fusing and encompassing Roommate’s broad and compelling love for musical freshness.

Currently, Roommate is still touring avidly all over the world and spreading his custom art everywhere he goes. He is focusing on releasing two full length Dubstep/Reggae and Trip hop albums in the near future. His labels and projects will continue to grow and influence the music and art communities for years to come. Roommate’s live show never dissappoints and always reflects his energy and skill. Let’s get this weekend rolling, deep heavy bass style. Pushing the limits of bass, we’ve got JLD #131 by BANNERWORX based out of London. Upfront Bannerworx seems like deejay pushing wax but he’s much more then that. Behind the curtains he is a designer for scene, label manager Sin City Recordings with Hatcha & N-Type and architect of Hatcha.tv

This mix is really hot and sounds like dubstep, straight up dubstep. If someone asked me to show them what dubstep sounds like or what it should feel like, i’d show them this mix. No mid-range squelchy tracks, just low-end driven dubstep tunes. Excellent. Not to say that there is no place for filth or agrostep in the genre, but it is nice to listen to a heavy mix which doesnt just rely of top 10 tunes and mosh-pit inducing riddims.

With nearly 20 years experience behind the turntables, it’s not hard to see why he is known as a “Party Starter” and the “Ladies choice”. His musical background spans from his New York roots of Hip Hop to the UK sounds of Dubstep, UK Garage & Funky House. With such a wide variety in music, it’s not hard to see why you may catch Bannerworx at your local night club dropping some 50 Cent, but in the blink of a eye, he will spinning some of the bass heavy Dubstep creations by Lost in Fabric London. Influenced heavily by bass pioneers such as Eprom and Heyoka, Fresh Young Minds has developed his own singular and funky production style, taking cues from a vast array of styles such as New Jack Swing, 80’s New Wave, 8-bit Dub, Psyphy, Drumstep, and Dubstep. In today’s bass culture, crossing genres is as acceptable as it is expected, and this is where artists such as Fresh Young Minds find a foot hold in their expressive freedom.

Fresh Young Minds has signed a super funky number called “Paper Primate” to MalLabel Music, with a rerub by bass music mastermind Mochipet of Daily City Records. With the first release of his new and first solo project signed, Fresh Young Minds plans to continue trying to stay ahead of the curve, making art for tomorrow’s dancers on today’s dance floors. “Being in the moment, with music, staying fresh is about understanding what people are going to want to dance to tomorrow,” says Fresh Young Minds, “in the Bay Area, the dancers are ahead of the curve. The next label dropping a mix for our JLDx series is still pretty new to the block but I can say with ease that it’s been one of my favorites since the start. Coming in from Amsterdam with 17 releases under their belt is Rwina Records mixed by Akkachar.

In my opinion a great label should have a good ear for new sounds, a good eye for spotting the right artist and the guts to put out music they believe in, Rwina does just that. I’ve been rinsing releases by Rwina starting off with #01, Starkey’s Just A. They’ve racked up a killer line up of names since then, signing great producers such as Taz Buckfaster, Eprom, Noah D, Terror Danjah, Swindle, Doshy, Desto, etc. Simply put: straight up killing it!

LABEL PROFILE:

Rwina Records is a new label out of Amsterdam distributed by Triple Vision and ST Holdings. In Moroccan, rwina means “never ending chaos”, and not sticking to the script is exactly what the label is about: pushing the global bass music scene’s boundaries further away from the center. Call it what you want in your own corner of the world, but there’s a global music scene growing… and it’s everything bass.

BIO BLIPS:

The ever-growing RWINA family is an international affair and includes a number of smaller names hob-nobbing with the big ones. Kicking things off with a nutso release by Starkey early off in his exploding career and continuing on with two hypercolour dub manifestos by the Glaswegian Taz Buckfaster and some nightmarish hip-hop from Playdoe, Rwina has gone all-out for 2010 with a blitz of jaw-dropping releases from Starkey, Eprom, SRC, Noah D, Terror Danjah and Rachet. Rwina expanded the diverse catalogue with Swindle, Bloom, 501, Doshy, Desto and another EP by Eprom in 2011.

Every single one of Rwina’s releases up to this point are worth getting, and each live in their own tie-dye world, a world as gloriously detailed and awe-inspiring as the eye-catching label artwork — seriously, some of these labels have to be seen to be believed. Couple that with a reliable ear for only the best tracks and you’ve got yourself a formidable set of twelves that would be hard to rival by any other label.

Alright, let’s get busy!! Starting off with our first JLD mix of the week coming in from a very promising up & comer from Vancouver, JLD #125 by Grasp The Erro. Now you may have heard of his name before as he’s been shaking more then a few bass bins. Having already signed to 5 labels with plenty of releases, this mix is packed with tons of great original productions.

Coming red hot from Seclusiasis member is JLD #124 by Sonkin, a once Philly based artist who now resides in Brooklyn. This mix features tons of great artist, lots of which I’m feeling at the moment. The mix even tapers off at the end with some Footwork. Super hype mix from Sonkin, enjoy.

BIO BLIPS:

Leon Sonkin has worked his way to becoming a strong DJ fixture in the northeastern dubstep/street bass community. Having played with the likes of Benga, Mrk1, Rusko, Noah D, Joe Nice, Chase & Status, Benny Page, 12th Planet, Trill Bass, along with a variety of world class electronic musicians, hip hop acts and bands, Sonkin is no stranger to the crowd. Abrasion Equation is the project of Jared (Dj Flak, Particle Son, Alpha Hinge) and Ryze (Ryze+Fall, Zonewire). Using dubstep as a foundation, Abrasion Equation creates music that incorporates electro, ambient, techno, and breaks. These aspects converge to form lush, textured soundscapes. Abrasion Equation uses computers and large amounts of hardware in their live sets. As such, there is never a shortage of knob turning and tweaking. The group has been described as “music for headphones and dance floors alike.”

Abrasion Equation currently releases tunes on Specops Music and is slated for a new release titled “Adam Smashers/Pillar 13″ on April 19th 2011. There is also a remix for Mortal Clay in the works to be released by EDM (a label owned by Josh Bradford of Revolting Cocks).

Previous releases include “Chem Trails/Offline” on Specops, and remixes for Dj Spooky and Erin Jale, released on Milkmoney Music.

BIO BLIPS:

The Secret Lemon Project are 3 UK producers currently focusing on making their own brand of dubstep (or lemstep for those in the know) which is intended to get the crowd going crazy.

In the studio SLP work to create new fun, original & heavy club smashing tunes which they then take out to the clubs using the DJ skills which have been honed over many years or and a live electronic group.

Their most recent release was the Lemon AIDS EP available from Monkey Dub Recordings on all good digital stores. After performing at an event alongside Wickaman he asked them to remix Mosquito, a drum & bass banger from J Majik & himself, they were so pleased with the remix that they asked SLP do do another remix of their latest commercial smash, In Pieces. Both these remixes will be available soon along with some other new exciting & original tracks.

You can also find some great free tracks which they have generously given away through their facebook & soundcloud pages including the Charlie, Filthy Lemon Whore & Sierra Le-owned which through their heavy sounds and comic twist created quite a buzz on the Internet & dubstep scene.

We’ve got another WICKEDDDD mix for you all to enjoy, JLD #121 by DJ Irk. This mix is extra big, as DJ Irk is a real pro on the 1s & 2s. I’ve had the chance to watch the man at work, live at gigs and also on my DUBSTEP.FM radio show. This guy has it in the bag! Winner of Ninja Tunes very own Cold Cut’s Solid Steel radio guest mix of the year 2010. No small feat, since everybody appearing on this show is a real master at what they do.

DJ Irk had been living in Montreal for a little bit, but is now back home in England again where he put together this very well planned & executed mix not only for JLD but co-presented on Solid Steel Radio yesterday by Cold Cut themselves. (WOW! is all I can say to that)

Do i dare say it… Possibly one of the best mixes to date in our podcast in my opinion. I think this mix as it all. Great mixing, superb flow and a variety of beats of everyone. So let’s get to it! BIO BLIPS:

As one of the pioneers of drum ‘n bass in the US, Edwin Garro—known by his fans as UFO!—has established himself as one of the world’s most talented and groundbreaking artists. Producing and performing across continents for nearly two decades, UFO! is internationally renowned for his innovative style and cutting-edge music.

A San Francisco native, UFO!’s musical roots trace back to the hip hop scene of the late ‘80s and early ‘90s. Mixing and scratching alongside fellow DJs QBert, Shortcut, Quest, and D-Stylz, UFO! quickly ascended to the ranks of battle DJ. Enthralled with the new urban sounds of London (hardcore, jungle and drum ‘n bass), UFO! founded San Francisco’s Phunckateck crew in 1996, performing alongside frontrunners such as Goldie, Ronnie Size, Ed Rush and Optical, Photek and Dieselboy. He released more than two dozen singles on labels such as Thermal, Position Chrome, Commercial Suicide, Green, and Phunckateck Communications. In 2001, UFO! released his first album, The Future Is Listening, on Thermal, one of the first full-length albums produced by an American drum ‘n bass artist.

A move to New York City in 2000 brought UFO! a plethora of new opportunities. While doing remixes for Trouble & Bass, UFO! scored scenes in the hit television series, CSI: NY from 2005-2006. An unstoppable force, UFO! also dived into the art world and landed a job at New York’s MoMA PS1, displaying and arranging art installations in the museum’s world renowned galleries.

Determined to reconnect with his cultural roots, UFO! left the country in 2009 to live in Costa Rica, where he collaborated with prodigy drummer Federico Gómez (.sØn!ka.). Together, the two formed the duo Cosmetics, and were immediately signed by international labels such as Filthy Digital (Denver), Bassism (SF), Forecast (Hungary) and Subdepth (UK).

Finally, in 2009, after a decade-long journey around the world, UFO! made his return to San Francisco, the place it all started. Currently represented by labels Frite Nite, Badman Press,  Brap Dem, and Hot N Heavy,and Subhuman. UFO! continues to edge forward faster and harder than ever. With several upcoming releases coming out on Frite Nite, Sex Cult, Sub Depth, Herd Killing, Mallabel and Subhuman…..UFO! proves relentlessly to be a force to be reckoned with.

Since summer slacking has set in a bit, we went the long weekend without a mix, but on the bright side we had plenty to drink & plenty of sun. San Francisco based DJ/Producer Porkchop (Benjamin Keyser) has built a rising obelisk of sound stemming from the muscles and chambers of the underground scene into the high gloss swash of the refined dubstep movement above. In addition to his solo offerings, Porkchop contributes to many of the SF bass-fixated conglomerates and operates half of ADSUM with Mikey Fisher (Future Simple Project). His live performances are a mix of heady minimalist dubs and spontaneous compositions, further blurring the lines between DJ, musician, and artist.

Well, well, what a surprise we’ve got here! Our fourth mix in our San Francisco Series, and our JLD mix #114 coming in from the biggest purple dinosaur since Barney & Friends, MOCHIPET !!!! If your unfamiliar with the name, then we’re gonna change that.

I’ve been a fan of Mochipet ever since his 2007 release Girls <3 Breakcore, wither or not this is true is irelevant, because I like girls who love Breakcore. In fact Mochipet has been releasing music since 2002 in all sorts of styles but mainly remaining in the IDM 8bit esthetics going up to Breakcore. From what I can tell he made his move into the world of Glitch Hop, very succesfully I may add, in 2008/09. His album Master P On Atari is a great listen and I recommend it (Girls <3 Breakcore too, if your into the harder and faster riddims). So it goes without saying that I'm more then proud to release this wicked mix by Mochipet, the San Fancisco Purple Dragon Dinosaur.

Watch out for his label Daly City, who features and will be featuring some great Montreal producers such as The Gulf Stream & Living~Stone.

Born in Taiwan R.O.C. to Rocket Scientist father and Kindergarten Teacher mother, David Wang (a.k.a. Mochipet) has been tinkering with electronics since he was a child. However, not until he added music to the equation, did something special begin to take shape. Having grown up listening to metal guitar, avant-garde jazz, and mainstream hip-hop, David’s eclectic taste can now be seen in his music ‘ ever changing, and always evolving.

His efforts have been recognized throughout the music community by way of nominations for titles including ‘Best Electronic Act of 2008′ from publications such as Clash Magazine (UK) and San Francisco Bay Guardian. His composition ‘Dessert Search for Techno Baklava’ has been performed by a 20 piece orchestra, Alarm Will Sound, around the world, most notably at New York’s Carnegie Hall, and Amsterdam’s Holland Festival!

Never wasting an ounce of drive, David founded and manages independent record label, Daly City Records (DCR), which runs out of the Bay Area ‘ home to many up-and-coming artists. He is also working to finish up two new albums, ‘Vendetta (with MC Zulu)’ and ‘Rawr Means I love You in Dinosaur,’ both set to hit on his label this summer!

I cannot express how excited and happy I am to unleash this mix for all to enjoy. Coming in as JLD #112 and our third mix in our San Francisco Series is an original North American Badman packing more bombs then the American army, big bawss badman DZ.

This guy needs no introduction or explication, but I’ll spew a little something in the way of a clipping from his bio giving a little release history.

On September 17 2007, Hotflush Recordings released what would be the last record in the “Scuba” series (scuba010) by a then-unknown producer from Canada, DZ, entitled “Slums Dub / Strong on Ya”. Although he was already well known on the dubstepforum for time due to almost weekly uploads in their ‘dubs’ forum, it was his remix of Morcheeba’s “World Looking In” released by LoDubs Recordings (losbod1208004) and his “Just Rolling / Leviathan ft. Bowzer” released by Black Acre Recordings (acre002) that put his name on the map in the dubstep world.

2008 was a massive year for DZ with no shortage of releases bearing his name, and even though he builds new material incessantly, forever chasing new sounds, arrangements, techniques and styles, he has maintained a core sound that continues to appeal to listeners worldwide. From “the speaker-popping drop of the year” (phonica) on High Deaf’s “The Boss” (OffRoad off001), to the “no-nonsense slice of dancehall murder balladry” (forced exposure) of “Old Timers” (Black Acre acre006), down to his “truck-sized steppy 4×4 floor packer” (phonica) remix of Bobby Caldwell’s “What You Won’t Do For Love” (Slit Jockey sj002), to the #1 selling dubstep track of 2008 on beatport (www.beatport.com) in “Down” (True Tiger ttr013), you would be hard-pressed to find a dubstep mix in 2008 without at least one of his tracks on it. Even house DJ’s have been playing his releases and dubs, from Diplo naming “Down” his #1 track of the month in XLR8R’s October 2008 issue, to Herve playing his remix of Jokers of the Scene’s “Baggy Bottom Boys” on his Radio1 Essential Mix, to Jack Beats battering his dub “AWOL” and the hundreds of mixes posted online featuring (and most opening with) his Bobby Caldwell remix.

Griffin March AKA DJ BOGL is a Bass Music professional. Originally from Las Vegas, BOGL is influenced by the diverse sounds of Hip-Hop, Jazz, and Abstract Electronic Dance Music. Based in the San Francisco Bay Area, with a style all his own, he is driven by fresh tune selection and making people dance. A virtual musical “Where’s Waldo?” he has played at almost every venue in San Francisco and has performed at various festivals such as Shambhala, Symbiosis, EmergNsee, and the Detroit Electronic Music Festival. He has DJed in Thailand, New York, Detroit, Philly, Las Vegas, Portland, Vancouver, Calgary, Nelson, and Los Angeles. As I try to run out the door during this nice sunny vacation day I just MUST unleash this first mix from our San Francisco producer series! I know right, it’s quite exciting!!! We’re gonna kick off the series with this summer time sunshine mix by Kush Arora, hosted by MC Zulu (one of my favourite MCs I’ve gotta add).
