JLD #73 – HULK

Hulk is the impulsive, bone-breaking alter ego of audio-scientists Claw and Richie August. They combined their creative powers for the common good after meeting at the 2009 Winter Music Conference in Miami, exchanging research and data in the fields of Dubstep, Hip Hop and Drum & Bass. But after an experimental dubstep drop exposed them to gamma radiation, their talents fused into the raging, supreme beast that is Hulk.

The deadly duo then began to tear through the music world, crushing all in their path without pity or mercy. Notable heroes have been alerted to and crossed paths with Hulk, including Modestep, Reid Speed, Excision, iwrestledabearonce, Mrk1, Downlink, Dieselboy, Caliban, Bare, The Gaslamp Killer, Emmure, Messinian and DJ Lord of Public Enemy.

Hulk’s first official release was home based in 2010 on Reid Speed’s Play Me Records as a Beatport Exclusive. The duo recently dropped the bomb known as “The Brotorious EP” on Dieselboy’s, SubHuman Records. Unfortunately, Hulk has shown no signs of stopping.

Prepare for mass Hulking Out around the world as Claw and Richie August combine their super-brains to bust out of convention and SMASH competition.

This little lady needs no introduction, so I’ll get right to it. This Friday, Katy B will be performing live in Montreal’s Le Belmont club – her first show ever in Canada. Luckily I’ll have a great view of things to come as I warm up the room before the performance and blow things up afterwards so we can dance till 3am. Somewhere between Dubstep, Grime and UK Funky House, Katy B came out in 2011 with something crucially different: a girl’s voice, soulful and sexy! Confidently seizing the middle ground between the totally on-point lyricism of Lily Allen, the swagger of Ms Dynamite and Neneh Cherry, Katy ’s killer combination of natural pop sass, uniquely powerful voice and total immersion in London’s club culture makes her the perfect popstar.

Katy B encapsulates the sound, spirit and unrestrained energy of British youth culture right now. Surrounded by a stellar cast of producers including Benga, Zinc, Magnetic Man and Geeneuus, founder of dubstep pionner radio station Rinse FM, ‘on a Mission’, her debut album, launched the 21-years girl to the top of UK charts within a couple of weeks. Some of videos, such as ‘Katy on a mission’ produced by Benga, have been watched more than 15 million times.

Katy B is the first bona fide pop star to emerge from the dubstep and UK funky undergrounds, she is definitely this fresh new pop star that really has it all! So, Montreal clubbers and music lovers, are you ready to warmly welcome her for her first Canadian appearance?

Before katy’s show, another concert is scheduled. More intimate, the support band is a unique voice, alone with her loop pedals: A K U A. MILES D What's up? my name is Miles Dozier, son of the african american long time career musician Michael Dozier and of Roseline Michaud. Its no surprise seing from what my father does that I have been a long time music lover since the age of ten when I was introduced to the album "about time" from the punk group pennywise. As I lived my teen years I was listening to korn, nofx , nirvana, primus, Les Claypool and of course a bit of rap. As I got into my older teen years and into being an "adult" the music that grew with me was a alot of death metal bands like: Nile, Slayer, Death and exhumed. Then it began, the electronic music, starting with techno, electro and minimal. It took me about 20 years to find my true love for drum & bass. My discovery of drum & bass is all because of rapper Tech N9ne, he has a song with a drum & bass vibe and as well as my good friend Kenny Almeida got me into some drum & bass artists such as Calyx, Dom & Roland, Goldie and so many more. What I love so much about drum & bass is there is such a variety of styles present such as reaggea, jazz, funk and rap. I started playing the guitar when I was ten and continued to do so intensely until around the age of 21 and to this day I am still an avid guitar player. I am also part of a rap group called Mouthaholics where I DJ and create songs. And finally, I wouldn't be where I am today if I wouldn't have started to DJ. At first I started DJing in electro and minimal tech and now I have moved all the way into the drum & bass (with a side project for dubstep) and I am hooked, pumped and ready for the massive drum & bass tunes fury of Dj Miles D. As his solo production moniker, Claw, he’s released a slew of critically acclaimed releases on Shift Recordings, Play Me, and Suicide Dubs, among others, and has been headlining shows in cities across the US over the last 3 years. It’s as Claw he got his start in Houston, gaining notoriety on the DnB circuit locally before making the jump to a short lived career as an audio engineer, and finally stepping onto the national stage as a forthright dubstep producer. Or as part of his current collaboration with Richie August, Hulk, he’s embraced the previously negatively connotated term ‘brostep’ and turned it into a positive to describe the big-room, heavy sound that the two are pushing with their label, Brotown Records. The duo’s been responsible for some of the biggest bootleg tunes of the last few years, including their smash remix of Jay-Z’s Empire State of Mind, as well as many original productions and remixes on labels like Potty Mouth and Tuff Love Dubs. Or formerly, as part of the Trillbass collective, he’s been responsible for pushing dubstep in new directions, incorporating heavy use of hip hop samples and instrumental riffs to almost single-handedly popularize what many are now calling ‘thugstep.’ Claw’s official remix, under the Trillbass moniker, of Wu-Tang’s Keep Hustlin’ recently debuted at #7 on the iTunes hip hop chart. Whether as a solo artist or in collaboration, Letko’s race to change the face of stateside dubstep cannot be denied.
