A new year, new project, lots of freshness… That’s pretty much the bases of Heads Up, a new series of event happening in Montreal which focuses on styles of music which it seems that only people on the west coast get to enjoy. Mainly Glitch Hop, Wonky, Electronic Experimental Hip Hop, illbiant, Turbo Crunk and whatever else we think is dope. You won’t be hearing any Dubstep at these events cause, frankly Montreal has Dubstep events coming out the ears at the moment. Something fresh is what we’re about to offer.

Presented by myself (Construct) & fellow JLD crew member Harmsworth under the banner of the WYLD STALLYNS, this event has support from some of the best crews around. Big love and respect to Mook Life, L O W – L I F E, and of course Wickedbad.net our main branch which JLD is part of.

Of course we’re talking about the 2nd edition of DubMachine’s Bass Fest !!!

This time around the festival seems to be on steroids, teaming up with the best and biggest crews in the city, the DubMachine + Bouddha Slinky promo crew with the help of The Session and Saint Woods have lined up a series of 10 SICK SICK SICK headliners teamed up with the cream of the crop of local djs and producers. Not only that, but acquiring the holy grail of Montreal rave venues, the “Palais des Congrès” ready to accomadate 5,000 screaming fans for a long night of bass pressure, sweating, and screaming.

Hot off the Beatamorph presses comes new tuff guy on the block Bytesize! He just released his First EP called Another Kind (Download a free sample track GAME OVER here). I sat down with him and grilled him with some hard hitting questions, this is what went down:

-That’s your name? where are you from?
My name is Charlie, I’m from a little town called Luton, which resides next to London, in the UK. 



-What’s the Dub Step scene like there?

The scene is absolutely massive here! Of course with the pioneers that are and always will be Skream and Benga, so many new artists are always finding their way into the limelight! Right now Persist for example is absolutely slaying people! I’m growing up in the same town that Circus Records was born in, as well as being home to the beasts that are Torqux & Twist. The scene over here is huge!


-How long have you been producing?

I’ve been producing seriously for about a year now, I mean I dabbled about on Fruity Loops now and then for a good 3 or 4 years after my younger brother showed me it…I was instantly hooked! But it wasn’t until January where I thought I could see myself doing this for a living, and so started really concentrating on my production then.


-Did you go to school or where you self taught?

I went to School but I didn’t take any music-related courses, until I studied music technology at College. Even then, it was more focusing on the use of recording live bands and live equipment as apposed to looking in depth at ‘beat making’ or ‘synth work’, so I suppose I have taught myself as I’ve gone on. Of course, Youtube has been a great help, especially with all the nifty tutorials you can find on there!


-Who are your biggest influences?

I have several influences, but it goes without saying that perhaps Flux Pavilion or Doctor P have swayed me towards their musical direction. You can hear the similarities between our music, although sometimes I stumble upon my sounds by accident…haha! My dad has played a huge part in my music, as he was/is a singer and guitar player, although I’ve never been able to play an instrument (do drums count?) myself. Koji Kondo & David Wise, my two favourite video game soundtrack designers have also played a big part in my musical ambitions.


-What drew you towards dub step? Any other work in other genres now or
in the near future?
You know, I think it was just something I picked up! I didn’t get much of the hype about dubstep when it first came about, as I used to make house tracks when I was first starting out, but it’s definitely grown on me! I started taking notice in 2008/9 I’d say, so a little while after it had started making it’s mark on the scene over here. Production wise, I tend to ‘drift off’ now and then, I mean on my forthcoming EP (out later this year, the follow up to the recently released ‘Another Kind EP’) I am trying to push myself to different boundries, for example I’ve got a DnB/Drumstep track in the works, aswell as a couple of Electro House/Glitch Step tracks. It really depends on what kinda of mood I’m in!


-Oprah, Nancy Grace, Ellen. You gotta marry one, kill one , and fuck one…GO!
Ahh, this is a tricky one! I’d kill Oprah, mainly because her existence annoys me! Otherwise, Nancy Grace would get a good roasting and I suppose Ellen could become my Spouse!


-Were can people buy your tracks and /or keep updated on you?

MARK INSTINCT – Hush House mix 001 — HUGE MIX !!!!

The first installement of our brand new series sees 23 year old Mark Instinct from Canada step to the task of mashing together his favourite beats along with giving us a sneak preview to the forthcoming filth from his lab.

Mark has been DJing for the past 7 years, and producing since an even earlier age. He started out making house under a different alias, had a couple of tunes signed to Total Recordings in Italy and Fluent Recordings in Canada but moved into Dubstep about a year ago and fell in love.

The release “Sketchy Maxx” was in Digital Tunes and Trackitdown top 10 for 3 weeks running. It has since been remixed by the likes of Trillbass, Emu, Pawn, Richie August, RSK, Kellydean + some! Having been signed to Aufect, Rottun and Betamorph Recordings for a load of forthcoming material, as well as an EP on Shift and an album on Trillbass, I’m sure you’ll be seeing this name all over the place soon. To top this, Enough of the chat, time to get your bassbins pumpin.
