Montreal’s most active Future Garage figure, HGLDT is making moves with his debut EP with Freshmore Records out of Houston, Texas. As the founder of Swing & Skip Records and a beloved underground monthly carrying the same name, HGLDT has already made is mark as a player in the Future Garage & Bass scene; even getting a few nods from XLR8R magazine for his label.

PR BLIPS:

Two original tracks and a remix, the three tunes on “Evolution” push the boundaries of emerging genres – “Bass Music” and “Future Garage.” Really, the music on this EP defies reductive categorization – its sound echoes the recent and not-so-distant past (Dubstep, Garage, percussive Dancehall, etc.), while shaping the future-present.

The EP takes off with “Wake Up Call.” A horn-blastin’, soulful intro rockets into a staccato, bass drum beat, integrating dancehall rhythms with percussive vocal stabs and hypnotic sample patterns. Heavy tune all around – funky bass with a hard edge. Recommended.

Kingthing’s take starts out dramatically, with the horns complemented by an entrancing filtered vocal sample and sparse stabs that sear the rhythm into your dancin’ pants. Evolving, dynamic tune that evokes elements of (UK) Garage, with drum rhythms alternating between housey and breaky/broke. Deep, in the jungle-sounding use of pads, samples, and horns. Latenight killer.

The third track on the EP really speaks to your soulful side, opening with some hooked vocals and filter-swept pads. Breakdown, then the heavy, pulsing march of bass and drums. Head-spinning rinse later leads to a soulful, arppeggiated synth-backed progression. Big, soulful tune – fire!

RCola(Royal Crown/JungleXpeditions/Wikkid) lives in Montreal, Canada and plays a high-energy blend of jungle and dubwise vinyls alongside his own original dubplates. After discovering jungle music on late-night
radio in 1999, RCola began producing and playing out as a DJ.

In 2002, he co-founded the infamous ‘Chopstick Dubplate’ label and began to release vinyls and tour. In 2004, he created his own labels ‘JungleXpeditions’ and ‘Royal Crown’ and to date has released 23 songs on vinyl and CD and toured throughout Europe 8 times playing over 100+ shows in 15 different countries.

In the studio, RCola has produced tunes with Top Cat, Demolition Man, MC Navigator, Barrington Levy, Johnny Osbourne, Jr. Reid, Jimmy Riley, Sister Nancy, Bass Nacho, and Bigg Triggs, who all appear on his vinyl and exclusive dubplate productions.

Now on tour promotiong his latest studio release “Rubadubwize” he will be touching down in Halifax to show the east coast how to rinse it out propa!!!

South Londoner Luke Envoy’s reputation on the turntables has earned him residencies at dubstep institutions FWD and Hench alongside regular appearances on the equally heralded Rinse FM and at a variety of European destinations from Fabric in London to Athens, Amsterdam and San Francisco.
His productions include the devastating tech sounds of ‘Gamma’ and ‘Honour Kill’ with their overt hardcore and jungle references, through to tricky edit-laden explorations like ‘Trapdoor’, a collaboration with Bristol’s Headhunter and the esoteric global influences of the vocal tinged ‘So’, his recent debut for the inimitable Tempa Records.
With remixes and future collaborations with the likes of Headhunter and Jakes, and a debut artist album in the pipeline alongside worldwide touring, 2009 looks to cement Luke’s arrival.
