JLD #73 – HULK

Hulk is the impulsive, bone-breaking alter ego of audio-scientists Claw and Richie August. They combined their creative powers for the common good after meeting at the 2009 Winter Music Conference in Miami, exchanging research and data in the fields of Dubstep, Hip Hop and Drum & Bass. But after an experimental dubstep drop exposed them to gamma radiation, their talents fused into the raging, supreme beast that is Hulk.

The deadly duo then began to tear through the music world, crushing all in their path without pity or mercy. Notable heroes have been alerted to and crossed paths with Hulk, including Modestep, Reid Speed, Excision, iwrestledabearonce, Mrk1, Downlink, Dieselboy, Caliban, Bare, The Gaslamp Killer, Emmure, Messinian and DJ Lord of Public Enemy.

Hulk’s first official release was home based in 2010 on Reid Speed’s Play Me Records as a Beatport Exclusive. The duo recently dropped the bomb known as “The Brotorious EP” on Dieselboy’s, SubHuman Records. Unfortunately, Hulk has shown no signs of stopping.

Prepare for mass Hulking Out around the world as Claw and Richie August combine their super-brains to bust out of convention and SMASH competition.

A new year, new project, lots of freshness… That’s pretty much the bases of Heads Up, a new series of event happening in Montreal which focuses on styles of music which it seems that only people on the west coast get to enjoy. Mainly Glitch Hop, Wonky, Electronic Experimental Hip Hop, illbiant, Turbo Crunk and whatever else we think is dope. You won’t be hearing any Dubstep at these events cause, frankly Montreal has Dubstep events coming out the ears at the moment. Something fresh is what we’re about to offer.

Obscure, soulful and dripping wet with bass is probably how I would start to describe this debut EP from Montreal based beat producer Wolfey. Sleep Country weights in with 3 solidly produced tracks which carry you threw a variety emotions. At the moment, the title track Sleep Country is pretty much on repeat in my headphones. Enough said.

With this project, Alexander Wolfe (a.k.a. Wolfey) aimed to capture the fear and uncertainty that hung quietly like a shadow over North America in the aftermath of the 9/11 attacks. Musically, he draws on a diverse array of influences ranging from artists such as Burial, DJ Shadow, and early James Blake to Radiohead, Boards of Canada, and Miles Davis.

Wolfey re-contextualizes classic soul vocals from the likes of Nina Simone and Billy Withers, whose mournful performances compliment the ominous vibes established by his use of atmospheric field recordings, and speech samples taken from Harmony Korine’s films Julien Donkey-boy and Gummo.

This is Wolfey’s first release on Blenheim & Celtic (Montreal, CAN). He originally planned to include four tracks on this release; however, upon the recommendation of a friend, (LA-based beat-maker & mc, Jonwayne), Wolfey decided to withhold the fourth track from the release in order to develop it a bit further. It may or may not be released in the future–

The Sleep Country EP was mastered at Transition Studios, (London, UK). The artwork is by Lincoln Clarkes (Vancouver, CAN).

Wolfey is an electronic musician based in Montreal, Canada. He studied electronic music production through Berklee College of Music (Boston, US). He is currrently finishing up undergraduate work in Philosophy and History at McGill (Montreal, CAN). As a dj, Wolfey has been quietly establishing a reputation performing in support of such forward-thinking artists as Eskmo (Warp, Ninja Tune) and Jonwayne (Stones Throw, Alpha Pup).

This is quite big. Win an opening spot at this winter’s Igloofest in Montreal! If you’ve not heard about Igloofest yet, here is a little info about it.

This year will be the 6th edition of Igloofest in Montreal, a 9 night outdoor freezing cold wicked awesome fun time with headlining DJs from around the world. The nights span over the last 3 weekends of January (Thursdays, Fridays & Saturdays) and attract around 10,000 people each night! (Brought to us by the fine people at Piknic Elektronique)

This year, we are very excited to learn that MALA will be the main act of the opening night, followed by Pearson Sound, Buraka Som Sistema and many, many other great acts on the following nights (mostly in the house, techno branch of things). It’s a wicked fun time out in the cold of night, with thousands of people jumping around in the wildest snow gear imaginable.

Well this year, Igloofest and Bench have teamed up to offer a round trip to Montreal, $1000 in Bench gear and of course a coveted opening slot of the main stage of the festival!

All you have to do is read the instruction of course, and submit your 30min mix to mixcloud with all the proper tags and guidelines. Any style of music is welcomed, so stress your flex a little and see what you can come up with!

I’ve already submitted my own mix and I suggest you all to do the same. It’s a great chance for you to be seen and listened to by people of all demographics and taste.

Alright, starting off the week with a real nut crusher of a mix this time. Coming hot and heavy is JLD #145 from Montreal’s Henward. Crew member at Samurais Des Jungles Urbaines (SJU, a MTL crew responsible for such recent shows as Birdy Nam Nam, DJ Craze, and coming soon Bonobo!) Henward has been cutting through the ranks and making moves. Enjoy the mix!

Yonatan Rosado, better know by his stage name Henward, is a montreal based dubstep DJ/producer since 2003. He is no stranger when it comes to the turntables. Childhood influences of reggae and hip – hop are being taken trough the blender during his sets to bring a unique perspective to the audience.With his experience, his explosive energy and his “in your face” style of djing, Henward keeps you hooked to his sound until the last song. With many notable performances under his belt (i.e.: Telus Spin festival, Tremblantʼs 24h, The Coors Light mystery mansion, Lilʻ Jonʼs opening act, Bassdrive MTL, etc…), he keeps rising trough the ranks of Montrealʼs elite djs. Now broadening his horizons into the production side of things, he brings the same energy to his tracks. Bringing his “mpc style” and hip-hop influence to the forefront of his music. So Cal native Jonwayne is an integral member of the LA beat scene’s second generation whose music has been bouncing between the walls of Low End Theory for months.

Originally involved in the local underground music community as a spoken word artist and rapper, Jonwayne soon found himself at the Airliner on Wednesday evening for Low End Theory. After experiencing a mind-blowing night at the club, the young artist discovered new creative inspiration and started making music. A tape of his raw, sticky and blunted beats made their way into the hands of Daddy Kev, and soon Jonwayne’s debut full-length album Bowser was born.

Montreal’s most active Future Garage figure, HGLDT is making moves with his debut EP with Freshmore Records out of Houston, Texas. As the founder of Swing & Skip Records and a beloved underground monthly carrying the same name, HGLDT has already made is mark as a player in the Future Garage & Bass scene; even getting a few nods from XLR8R magazine for his label.

Two original tracks and a remix, the three tunes on “Evolution” push the boundaries of emerging genres – “Bass Music” and “Future Garage.” Really, the music on this EP defies reductive categorization – its sound echoes the recent and not-so-distant past (Dubstep, Garage, percussive Dancehall, etc.), while shaping the future-present.

The EP takes off with “Wake Up Call.” A horn-blastin’, soulful intro rockets into a staccato, bass drum beat, integrating dancehall rhythms with percussive vocal stabs and hypnotic sample patterns. Heavy tune all around – funky bass with a hard edge. Recommended.

Kingthing’s take starts out dramatically, with the horns complemented by an entrancing filtered vocal sample and sparse stabs that sear the rhythm into your dancin’ pants. Evolving, dynamic tune that evokes elements of (UK) Garage, with drum rhythms alternating between housey and breaky/broke. Deep, in the jungle-sounding use of pads, samples, and horns. Latenight killer.

The third track on the EP really speaks to your soulful side, opening with some hooked vocals and filter-swept pads. Breakdown, then the heavy, pulsing march of bass and drums. Head-spinning rinse later leads to a soulful, arppeggiated synth-backed progression. Big, soulful tune – fire!

Craze’s life is a legacy of rags to riches, geek to chic, no-name to world fame. He never had it easy from fleeing battle in Nicaragua at the age of 3 to a geeky adolescence to Hurricane Andrew hitting Miami in 1992 nor did have ever have any coattails to ride; his is a story that’s an uphill battle, but a story that ends right at the top. “My mom always taught me I could do anything I put my mind to. So when she asked what I wanted to do with my turntables, I told her, ‘Be the best DJ in the world,’” Craze casually laughs. And that he proved 3 times at the DMC World Championships, an unprecedented record, and a title that no other solo DJ has yet to match. While Craze is regarded internationally and unquestionably as one of the best scratch DJs in the world, it’s still astonishing to see his overwhelming number of titles on paper: Craze has won first place for the USA DMC Championships in 1998, World ITF Scratch Off Championships in 1998, ITF Western Hemisphere Scratch Off Championships (1998, ’99), Winter Music Conference Scratch Off Champion (1996, ’97, ’98, ’99), East Coast DMC Championships (1997), East Coast Rap Sheet Championships (1996) and Zulu National Championships (1995, ’96), to name but a few. Additionally, DJ Craze claimed 2nd place in the first DMC Team Championship with his Allies’ crew (which included fellow champions A-Trak and Infamous) in 1999 and then in 2000, the Allies’ won the Team Championship title, taking it from the previous year’s winners the Scratch Perverts.

THE KILLABITS

After setting the internet on fire throughout 2010 with countless Dubstep Remixes and Underground releases The Killabits have come out strong in 2011.

Having teamed up with California’s Dubstep heavyweight ‘Play Me Records’ their April release ‘Hard Feelings’ has been putting them clearly in the international spotlight. Both songs from this 2 song mini-EP reached the top 20 on the Beatport Top 100 Dubstep charts within days of its release.

Having completed a recent west coast America run The Killabits are currently working on both blazing new Dubstep beats as well as collaborations with some of Toronto’s best musicians, all while planning trips to over-seas, the west-coast of Canada and back into America for a full length national tour. Coming out of Toronto, Canada where the talent is considered to be atop the international Dubstep & Electro playing fields, this Duo also maintains their weekly co-created event ‘Bassmentality’ This residency has reached international acclaim and has played host to some of the worlds leaders like Nero, Skrillex, Borgore, Doctor P and of course the other half of this events creators Zed’s Dead.

With recent releases charting on Beatport’s massively influential Dubstep charts, the iTunes US Top 200 & Top Pop 100 and strong support at BBC Radio 1 it’s easy to see why this hard-hitting production duo has such a rabid fan-base and are regularly considered a household name in the Dubstep & Bass music scene.

In a time where too many people either receive acclaim too easily or simply buy their way into the industry and mp3-players of fans all over (if this is you – yeah, you suck for it). Sometimes an artist will breakthrough because of their hard work ethic, great attitude and all around positive vibe. When it comes to Living~Stone, nothing could describe him better. This guy carries as much heart as he does bass.

Busting out bass in multiple styles, Living~Stone has been building his craft for more then a minute. Crunking out some glitch-hop, dubstep, or straight up bass; L~S is a proud supporter of Bass Culture in general. His crew Dig-it-Al, along side Vipond (featured as Guestlist on JLD JLD28, JLD13 / L~S JLD21) have been holding it down in town with a free sunday night event at Blizzarts (Montreal) giving free access to bass to all in need.

So, no rushing around trying to fit in multiples types of sounds in a 30min set. Over 2hr to myself to play some vinyl and digital tunes.

Lots of great tracks inside, featuring big players such as Addsion Groove, Bodika, James Blake, Geoff Bukk, JSaxton, Untold, etc, etc. I think you can really see an influence in sounds coming into my crates via BoilerRoom.TV (fucking love this podcast series). Anyway, this was a great chance to flex and play something I don’t get to play in bars or raves much. Fun times, except 1 needle not cuing properly on a few vinyls, but nothing that’s gonna bring me down.

Jacques Greene hasn’t been around long, but that doesn’t mean he’s not well know. Having already released on Night Slugs and Lucky Me, Jacques career is off to a great start. His hits Another Girl& What You Want has been rinsed by many of the greats and lined up in many a mix. Don’t miss this show, stacked with Falty DL, Modeselektor, and a few other great names. At just 21 years old, Jacques Greene has very little biography to report. But what the young Montreal bass producer lacks in history he makes up for with potential. With two singles under his belt with such sought-after labels as Night Slugs and LuckyMe, Greene has laid out a promising template for an energetic blend of UK garage and affected female vocals within the kind emo-dubstep terrain first staked out by Burial and later pursued by labels like Hessle Audio and acts like Pangaea and Ramadanman. Along with other LuckyMe acolytes such as Lunice and Ango – with whom the producer also shares the stage at Red Bull Music Academy events – Greene belongs to a new generation of Montreal electronic musicians who are looking right past techno to hip-hop and the UK for influences. How this loosely connected collection of local talent plays out over the coming years is anyone’s guess, but for Montreal it can only bode well to have new such new blood testing the boundaries of where the city’s soundtrack can venture.

Ken Lo Craqnuques (aka Akena Lohamba Okoko) is a producer from Sainte-Foy, Québec, who’s been operating his beat spaceship since 2005. In 2007, he began releasing the free instrumental series entitled Craqnuques, which has so far issued seven colour series of random productions and broken loops (Noir, Bleu, Mauve, Orange, Rose, Brun and Turquoise). Lo also works on various online instrumental projects (Bullesbubbles I & II with VLooper (2009), Qwerty Musique : Mononucléose (2009), Cailloux Germés EP (2010) and has added some Montreal flavour to the Beat Dimensions vol. 2 (2009) compilation.

KOMODO:
Well, Komodo is sooo sick! That pretty much sums it, oh and he’s played a great role in the history of Dubstep in Montreal! His live show always impresses me. It’s like a continual flow of instruments being pulled out from behind the stage. Blending his live production and organic instruments to fill the room with reverberating warm sounds. Check out his newest album, Shadow Dance, which just release in the month of May.

Komodo is a Montreal-based composer, musician and DJ who specializes in playing fast dub basslines on the Australian didgeridoo, as well as producing heavy beats and bass, and playing an assortment of other instruments such as Turkish flute and frame drum. His DJ sets feature live performance on his instruments and showcase many of his original tracks produced specifically for his live shows. In Montreal, Komodo currently runs a bass music night called Komodo Dubs that has been graced by such international electronic music luminaries as Shackleton, 2562, Benga, and Caspa. Komodo’s first full-length album, entitled Subluna, was released in Canada in 2008. He will be releasing his next album, entitled Shadow Dance, on May 24th, 2011.

MUTEK is incredibly proud to present PLASTIKMAN LIVE on home turf, a concert that constitutes the Canadian premiere of the highly prized audio-visual performance Hawtin originally envisioned for his debut live performance at MUTEK 2004. Montreal-based Léon Lo has been active in the city’s musical activity since the turn of the millennium. Under numerous guises, he has been involved in independent, experimental, electro-acoustic, improvised, electronic and free-jazz endeavours. As an active member of ESL Productions, he has DJ-ed with the likes of Roska, Mary Anne Hobbs, Altered Natives, Bok Bok and Dubbel Dutch, to name a few. He also co-hosts the ESL Overnight radio show on London-based internet radio Nasty.fm alongside crew members BUS and Bowly. His Skinnybones project, started not yet one year ago, is an exploration of the myriad sounds of the post-UK Garage lineage. His compositions are characterized by a percussive approach and a very personal take on Montreal’s Rave years. Skinnybones’s appearance at MUTEK this year will mark his very first live performance.

Montreal duo The Gulf Stream takes hip-hop templates and feeds them into the hungry mouth of international bass music. Composed of Kodok (Ivann Uruena) and Archibald Singleton (Jérôme Guilleaume), when they first geared up to jam the pair were a ways off from knowing that they would have such fun playing together. As they grew musically, they forged their sound around a mid-tempo hip-hop, full of subtle samples, melodic synths and powerful basses. Anything goes when it comes to samples. The live set they play is always evolving, full of glitches and as they never stopped jamming, new compositions keep emerging each time they play.

Young British producer FLOATING POINTS pulls house music into the space-time continuum of soulful disco. On the second stage, a Montreal roster of new club talents – FOOTPRINTZ, RECIFE, and SIMON CALLED PETER – hearkens back to a time when house was happier, breaks were beefier, and the beat went on forever.

The sun is warm again, summer is creeping up, and Montreal is waking up. I can already feel the energy building for what seems to be a great festival season in our lovely city. Mutek just announced their killer lineup featuring a live performance from Amon Tobin, full on Vancouver Lighta! crew representation from Michael Red to Daega Sound System. Babe Rainbow, Xi, Falty DL and the list goes on.

Even more exciting is the prospect of another AH-mazing season for Piknic Electronik, Montreal’s best summer jewel. Pikic, for those who aren’t familiar is an open air, sunday afternoon/evening event which happens every week of the summer on Park Jean-Drapeau. This family friendly event is THE best thing going on sundays – Tam Tams is still very cool. People of all variety come together to dance and chill in the sun, consume some delicious beer, bagette and brie.

Last year, Vilify and myself were honored to be invited to spin along side Bassnectar, our friends LivingStone & Vipond (Dig-it-aL) and Lexis (musicismysanctuary.com) for what seemed to be the biggest and brightest day of the year! Everything was wonderful, including the super friendly staff from the Piknic crew (<3 you all).

Anyway, it gives me chills to listen to this live recording of our set and I hope you will enjoy as equally. Big thanks to Piknic for having picked our set out of countless other top notch producers and deejays who have graced their wonderful stage.

If you aren't from Montreal but live not too far, I strongly suggest that you fill up a few cars and make a road trip to one of these events.

We love the E.S.L. Crew, so it made us very happy to see Bowly get such a warm welcome from many big names in Europe on his recent journey over the pond. After playing a bunch of gigs overseas, Bowly ended his trip with an early morning appearance on RINSE.FM’s Grimey Breakfast Show hosted by Scratcha.

Until then, here’s some Sunday Morning vibes from Montreal’s Bowly whose recent European tour culminated in a stop on Scratcha DVA’s Grimy Breakfast Show – probably the only radio program in history to offer both London Tube updates AND a Hyperdub DJ commenting on Beyonce’s skin tone. In addition to competing in UK Vs Canada trivia, the ESL DJ was invited to spin a few tunes, delivering an all-Montreal showcase featuring his own production plus beats by RLY Guilty, Hissy Fit, HGLDT and Skinny Bones. I’ve mentioned some of those names around these parts but listening to their work presented in 1 mix is probably the best way to understand why I’m so excited about the music that’s coming out of here.

Alright, we’ve got a wicked mix coming to us from DJ Hosta, one half of the Komodo Brothers who are at the foundation of the Montreal Dubstep scene years ago along side a few other heads. Their nights “Komodo Dub” where some of the first nights to draw multiple hundreds of bass heads, featuring such acts as Shackleton, LD, and most recently N-Type.

Enjoy this mix, it will have to tie us over until we receive an exclusive mix that we can claim for the JLD series.

I try to avoid live show reviews around here. In the wise words of Disco Vietnam, there’s really only two possible reactions to a show one didn’t attend: “It rocked? Damn…” and “It sucked? Damn…” That goes double for DJ-run club nights where the vibe, atmosphere and intoxication goes a long way towards fueling the evening and where descriptions of amazing song transitions never read well after the fact.

That said, longtime readers will have noticed that I go out of my way to big-up Komodo Dubs, easily Montreal’s most thorough Bass Music crew whose events go all out in terms of sound, visuals and organization. I am an admited fan. Until now however, I haven’t been able to back up my breathless praise with much in terms of music as they hadn’t leaked much to the net in terms of mixes. Thankfully, that ends today with this hour long clinic by DJ Hosta, mixing and matching everything from Deep Dub to next level Night Slugs “Wot U Call it?” music into a concise and far-reaching package that highlights just how far things have come and how open the scene is to new ideas. From OGs like Mala and RSD to the next hype of Girl Unit and Flux Pavilion, this is where it’s at in January 2011 and serves as the perfect antidote for these dark winter days. Silkie’s rise to prominence has been documented by several high profile achievements, including the acclaimed release of his City Limits album on Deep Medi and being personally chosen by Mala to feature on Mary Anne Hobbs’ legendary Generation Bass show.

I’m happy to say that The Gulf Stream, composed of Montreal’s Archibald Singleton and France’s Kodok have just signed an EP with Mochipet’s Daly City label. The Native’s Mantra EP features two orignal track by The Gulf Stream, and three remixes by Living~Stone, Funky Falz and Florian MSK (all of which are from Montreal I believe).

The Gulf Stream is born following series of jam sessions during the summer and autumn of 2009 between Kodok and Archibald Singleton. Pressed by the possibility of playing with the CRUZ control crew on november 14th 2009, the duo geared up and played their first live set together. Almost exactly one year after this first experience, TGS releases is first album, Native’s Mantra EP. The EP comprise two original tracks and three remixes from friends and close music partners: Funky Falz, Florian MSK and Living~Stone. During their first year, the two associates shared the stage and played their original material with people like Dilemn (FR), Fulgeance (FR), Lunice (CA) during EMF at Rouyn Noranda, Technical Kidman (CA) and many more to come. TGS’s music can be defined by the merging of Kodok’s organic synthesizers and subtiles sounds and Singleton’s keyboards, deep basses and rhythms, creating a rich and picturesque sound. Each track is like a landscape, as a waken dream or a told story.

After a year and a half of great times and unforgettable memories at Koi Lounge, we are excited to announce that we will be moving to the Belmont (4483 St Laurent, corner of Mont Royal) starting September 29th with Bouddha Slinky presenting the incredible UK duo of Bar 9

Here is a little bio action:

Birmingham dubstep producer/DJ Emalkay, pronounced M – L – K, is one of the most exciting talents to emerge on the scene in recent times, and is certainly one to watch out for in 2010. With the recently released ‘When I Look at You’, 2009 has so far witnessed Emalkay’s sudden rise to prominence.

‘When I Look at You’ has not only been heavily supported by the scene’s biggest artists, it was chosen by both BBC Radio 1’s Zane Lowe and the Guardian newspaper as single of the week, and has been receiving a healthy amount of airplay courtesy of Radio 1 and 1Xtra. However, not content with producing arguably the biggest underground anthem of the year, Emalkay has also been busy remixing tracks for the likes of Freeland, BBE and the Amon Tobin/Doubleclick duo Two Fingers, which featured the vocals of UK hip hop artist Sway.

Having been previously signed to the Boka Records imprint, Emalkay already has a healthy back catalogue of releases under his belt – most notably the 2007 anthem ‘Mecha’, which helped pioneer the heavier sound of dubstep with its cinematic, sluggish beats and gut-wrenching bass. As of 2008 – and with the production of ‘Explicit’ – Emalkay was snapped up by the prestigious Dub Police label that helped pave the way for his most recent success.

Now, with a handful of fresh tracks circulating amongst the hottest names in dubstep, things can only get better for the Birmingham producer who has since gone on to headline events all over the world, including the United States and Australia.

What’s up gang!

Well, tonight is my last fill-in spot for the 514 Session with HGLDT, (not to worry, Vilify and I have our spot secured on Friday nights 9-11pm EST).

Tonight, I will have our good bud LAZERFACE come in to tag with me, since Vilify is gone to Toronto to play Dubslingers tomorrow (wed) at Thymeless.
